LANCASTER – Littlerock High School graduate Steven Andrew Dassler Jr. was presented a Purple Heart medal during a City Council meeting ceremony. Dassler, 19, an Army specialist with the 3rd Infantry Division, lost his right leg below the knee in July when an explosive device blew up under the Humvee he was driving while his unit was on patrol in southeast Baghdad. Dassler, who is home on leave, is now using a prosthetic leg. Dassler’s father, Steve, is Lancaster public works assistant director and city engineer. His mother, Brigitte, is a noon duty supervisor and instructional aide at Challenger Middle School in Lake Los Angeles. Before being injured, Dassler had planned to make the military a career, but now plans to go back to school and become a computer graphics animator. He will return to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., to continue his therapy.
