first_imgThere was no sign of Wayne Rooney’s shoulder injury troubling him on Monday morning as he began England training half an hour early. Press Association The Manchester United striker missed the Community Shield win over Wigan with a shoulder problem he suffered in pre-season. United boss David Moyes questioned Rooney’s fitness, but he looked in top shape as he sped out to train at St George’s Park on Monday. center_img The striker came out to train just after 10am, a full half-hour before England’s training session was due to begin. He did a few stretches before taking part in some shooting and passing practice with the England goalkeepers and coaching staff while the rest of the squad remained indoors before emerging shortly after 10:30am. Rooney’s future has been the subject of much speculation this summer, with Chelsea having made two bids to sign the 27-year-old. Moyes reiterated his desire to keep Rooney, insisting the former Everton man was not for sale. Rooney put in a typically combative display during the open part of the session, launching into tackles and harrying his team-mates for the ball in several drills. Meanwhile, the six Manchester United players who played in the Community Shield – Danny Welbeck, Chris Smalling, Wilfried Zaha, Tom Cleverley, Michael Carrick and Phil Jones – were all absent after their exertions at Wembley. They took part in a warm-down session inside along with Everton duo Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines – who played in a friendly against Real Betis on Sunday. Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Gary Cahill, who have been in the United States with Chelsea, will join up with the squad tomorrow. Eight players from the Under-21 squad, including Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard and Tottenham’s Tom Carroll, made up the numbers at the session, which was taken by England manager Roy Hodgson and his staff. last_img read more
