When she wasn’t performing rock anthems like “Zombie,” “Linger” and “Dreams” before audiences of thousands, O’Riordan was often at her cottage north of Peterborough, Ont., about 90 minutes northeast of Toronto. It was there she escaped from her sometimes relentless global fame and lived for years with her family. The region was also fruitful grounds for her two solo albums.bye bye Gio. We’re off to Ireland ? pic.twitter.com/d6HKOFJqGB— Dolores O’Riordan (@DolORiordan) January 4, 2018“I’m half a Canuck,” she said in a 2009 interview with The Canadian Press. “I’ve spent half my life here now.”O’Riordan was found dead Monday at a hotel in London, where she was recording new music. Her publicist said the singer’s family is “devastated.” The cause of her death wasn’t immediately available. With her former husband Don Burton, their two kids and a child from Burton’s previous relationship, they spent years dividing time between Ireland and their Ontario cottage. When they met, the Toronto-born Burton was the tour manager for Duran Duran but he wound up taking on O’Riordan’s career.Though they eventually separated, O’Riordan kept her connections to Canada. On Boxing Day, she posted on social media that she was headed to Ontario to spend time with her family. She frequently talked about how she enjoyed the province. Whether it was riding a Sea-Doo or a snowmobile she was known for exploring the great outdoors.“You can really get lost here, and I like that,” she said.“The seasons are so dramatic here — from the snow in the winter to the beauty of the autumn, the colours of the leaves falling — so I have a piano outside my window and sometimes I start off there with ideas, just using nature as a backdrop.”O’Riordan released two solo albums that were recorded in Canada. “Are You Listening,” in 2007, was produced at Metalworks Studios in Mississauga, Ont., and EMAC Recording Studios in London, Ont.Her 2009 followup, “No Baggage,” was recorded solely at EMAC. The album cover features O’Riordan sitting on a bench atop the frozen Big Bald Lake in the backyard of her home.Robert Nation, owner of the EMAC studio, remembers O’Riordan’s unabating sense of self whenever she was working.“She had to be totally inspired and in the moment. If she wasn’t she’d say, ‘I’m going to go out for a while, get outside and let you know what I’m doing later,”‘ Nation said.“She knew when she was feeling right and when she was comfortable. It was the first time I came across (someone) like that.”Dolores O’Riordan, the defiant voice of Irish rock band the Cranberries who died Monday at 46, found a certain solace in her second home — a remote town in Ontario.By David Friend, The Canadian Press Facebook Twitterlast_img read more

If the transmission fails, the car isn’t going anywhere. That’s not exactly expected vehicle behavior, hence Toyota’s latest recall.Toyota on Thursday issued a recall for the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. Approximately 3,400 vehicles are included in this recall, but Toyota did not say if they share similarities like build dates or anything. The problem comes from the hatchback’s continuously variable transmission. There is a chance the torque converter could fail, and if that happens, the vehicle won’t be able to accelerate forward. If this happens at higher speeds, it could increase the chance of a collision. The fix isn’t necessarily complicated, but it does require a bit of heavy lifting. In order to remedy the issue, dealership technicians will replace the CVT in its entirety with a new CVT featuring a revised torque converter. Since it’s a recall, the work will be completed with no charge to the owner — that said, it may take a few hours to slap that new CVT in there, so don’t expect a lightning-fast swap.Toyota is currently sourcing the parts for the recall. Owners should receive recall notifications via first-class mail by the middle of February. first_imgWhite Oak Music HallWhite Oak Music Hall To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: 00:00 /01:14 Harris County District Judge Kristen Hawkins recently granted a temporary injunction prohibiting two planned outdoor concerts at the North Main music venue. A lawsuit that was filed by nearby residents is set for May 15th, but attorney Cris Feldman says they’re now asking for a hearing in a separate action. Listen X “Residents are asking that Section 30-11 of the Municipal Code be invoked. That provision allows for a hearing on the sound permit. In papers publicly filed by White Oak Music Hall, they state it would be impossible — and they actually italicize the term ‘impossible’ — to keep their music to 75 decibels at the perimeter of their property.”   But Diana Pfeifer of the Lindale Park area says the music hall has been forthcoming about its plans when it first presented its Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU. “White Oak Music Hall never hid the fact that they wanted to have an outdoor venue, and that’s why components like sound and parking and traffic were included in the MOU.”   Attorney Feldman says the citizens he represents are not asking that the indoor stages be shut down — only that the hearing be held on the sound permit allowing outdoor amplified music. first_imgAn error message on the housing voucher waiting list online application on Oct. 22. (Screenshot by Guy Valerie Bosworth)A waiting list for Baltimore’s Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly Section 8) had 6,500 applicants within 30 minutes of the application going live online. By noon of the second day, the Housing Authority of Baltimore City (HABC) had received 44,488 applications for the list. Prior to the application website going live on Oct. 22, HABC had said there would only be 25,000 spots opened on the waiting list, and that they would be filled by a random lottery if the authority received more than 25,000 applications.Applications to the waiting list can only be submitted online at http://www.jointhelist.org, and some residents have reported glitches while trying to apply on the website. Guy Valerie Bosworth, a senior at the University of Baltimore who is currently homeless, received an error message telling her to contact the housing authority the four times she attempted to apply on the first day.Another woman, who said she is 61 and also living in a shelter, e-mailed the AFRO on Oct. 23, claiming the website for the application was down when she tried to access it.Tania Baker, deputy director of communications for HABC, told the AFRO in an e-mail, “There was an issue yesterday (Oct. 22) that was quickly resolved. We have not heard of or experienced any issues today. We would encourage anyone using a PC to use the latest version of Internet Explorer.”The waiting list application will remain active through Oct. 30. It is the first time since 2003 that HABC has been accepting new applications for the list.ralejandro@afro.comlast_img read more

first_img Today in San Francisco, Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference was all about the company’s upcoming software: iOS 8 for mobile and OS X Yosemite for PCs.Both platforms have been improved to work more seamlessly, through the cloud, in order to make virtually all media available across all of a users’ devices. Here’s what you’ll want to know about each, plus some important details for iOS developers.OS X Yosemite: Apple has further tweaked the OS X motif to mirror the redesign introduced with iOS 7 with new, flatter icons and subtle color adjustments based on desktop image or windows behind it. Users accustomed to Mavericks or Mountain Lion should be comfortable with Yosemite which includes new features such as the ability to search across contacts, documents, the web and calendar events from Spotlight — which appears to also use geolocation to bring users relevant local information.Apple’s answer to Dropbox and Google Drive is iCloud Drive. It allows users to access all documents across devices from within the finder. With it comes MailDrop, a new feature that will allow users to send larger files that recipients might normally be able to handle by creating a secure link and storing it in the cloud, instead of bouncing the email back to the sender.Related: What’s That Song? Apple’s iOS 8 May Be Able to Tell You.On Yosemite, AirDrop will work between iOS and Mac with a new feature called Handoff. A new lock screen on the iPad lets users continue work they were doing on a PC on a mobile device simply by swiping. Users will also be able to setup hotspots on their phone from their computer.Syncing an iPhone to a Mac will also allow users to answer text messages and even phone calls from their computer, using their Mac as a speakerphone. The feature also lets users make calls from a computer, even if their iPhone is in another room.iOS 8: Apple’s new mobile operating system will build upon iOS 7 in terms of feel and functionality but with some new features. In iOS 8, users will be able to reply directly to a message or comment or Like something on Facebook straight from the notification center or the lock screen and doubletap the home button to see recent contacts in the task switcher. Other upgrades include a new tab view in Safari for iPad and new gestures for organization in the Mail app.Group messaging now allows users to name threads or remove people from the conversation. Messages will also include “Do not disturb” and “leave thread” features.Messages will also allow users to record audio or video by tapping on the text box. It also includes a Snapchat-like self-destruct feature.Spotlight for iOS, a tool that OS X has had for a while, lets users search for apps, points of interest, news, songs the web and iTunes. It’s like Siri but without a voice.Siri itself has been updated to make purchases from the App Store and recognize songs via Shazam.Apple also seems to be updating its predictive text feature with QuickType, which “supports predictive suggestions” by guessing the word a user is trying to type and learning from their typing habits.Related: Should You Buy an iPhone 5S Now or Wait For the iPhone 6?With iOS 8 is the introduction of Healthkit, a centralized place to see health info that will allow healthcare providers to send and receive data on patient devices. Also new is HomeKit for home automation. Apple is partnering with home appliance companies to integrate locks, lights, cameras, doors, thermostats, plugs and switches into the iOS environment. The new automated controls will feature secure pairing, control for individual devices, allow grouping of devices for families and include Siri integration.New family sharing features allows families to automatically share photos, calendars and reminders and their locations. Families can also share purchases; for instance if a child wants to purchase an app on his phone, he can send a request to buy the app through the App Store and permission can be approved from an adult’s device.iOS 8 will also support Extensibility, the ability for apps to offer services to other apps. For instance users could use their photo filters from VSCO inside of the native photos app. The new iOS will also support widgets for the notification center and inside of Safari, similar to extension in Chrome.Apple is also allowing users to import third-party keyboards and opening Touch ID to developers.Developers: Apple is introducing a new programming language called Swift that can co-exist with C and Objective-C but allows developers to build and run their code immediately.Game developers in particular will welcome the new Metal graphics booster and SpriteKit and SceneKit for developing casual games.iOS 8 and Yosemite are both available to developers today and will be released to the public for free this fall.Related: Here’s How to Quit the iPhone and Switch to an Android Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.
