While there is evidence of regular, room-temperature yoga’s positive effect on blood pressure, little is known about hot yoga’s potential impact on blood pressure, said researchers who presented the study at Hypertension 2019 Scientific Sessions in the US. “The results of our study start the conversation that hot yoga could be feasible and effective in terms of reducing blood pressure without medication,” said study author Stacy Hunter, Assistant Professor at Texas State University. For the recently conducted study, the research team recruited 10 men and women, between ages 20-65 years. Participants had either elevated blood pressure (systolic blood pressure between 120 mmHg to 129 mmHg and diastolic pressure less than 80 mmHg) or stage 1 hypertension (130 mmHg to 139 mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg to 89 mmHg diastolic pressure.) Also Read – Shallu Jindal honoured with Mahatma AwardThe research team randomly assigned five participants to take 12 weeks of three times-weekly hour-long hot yoga classes and they assigned the other five to a control group of no yoga classes. They compared the average blood pressures of the two groups after the 12 weeks. The researchers looked at average 24-hour blood pressure readings, as well as perceived stress and vascular function of participants in both groups. They found systolic blood pressure dropped from an average 126 mmHg at the study’s start to 121 mmHg after 12 weeks of hot yoga. Average diastolic pressure also decreased from 82 mmHg to 79 mmHg in the hot yoga group. According to the study, average blood pressure did not change among the five adults in the control group, those who did not take hot yoga classes. Perceived stress levels fell among those in the hot yoga group but not in the non-yoga group, the research said.last_img read more

Celebrities can play a bigger role in working with the United Nations to call attention to the world’s overlooked or under-reported crises, but they must be well informed if they are to have a positive impact, the actor and director George Clooney said today. In an interview with the UN News Service after his joint briefing with Nobel Laureate and UN Messenger of Peace Elie Wiesel to the Security Council in New York about the dire situation faced by the people of Darfur, Sudan, he said celebrities can help ensure crises stay under the media spotlight. In the case of Darfur, Mr. Clooney said the immediate goal is to try to bring action before the end of the month, when African Union (AU) soldiers are slated to leave the region, which may spark an exodus of humanitarian workers. Some 3 million people in Darfur depend on aid for food, shelter and health care.“Our job wasn’t to try and convince anybody in that room. Our job was to try and make sure cameras got there. Because once you shine a light on people, they tend to have to honour their commitments,” he said, citing last month’s Security Council resolution 1706, when members voted to deploy more than 17,000 UN peacekeepers. The resolution “invites the consent” of the Sudanese Government to the deployment, but Khartoum has stated repeatedly that it is opposed to any UN blue helmets taking over from the AU.Mr. Clooney said the challenge now for him, Professor Wiesel and others was to try to keep Darfur in the public eye up until the AU departure deadline at the end of the month.“I really think that our job is to try and empower and buoy up the UN, because without them I don’t know what we can do? Things come and go very quickly [in the spotlight]. Like the Darfur rally in May or in April, and everyone goes, ‘Well, we fixed it,’ and then they go away.”Mr. Clooney said that while there has been a long history of celebrities and public figures working to spotlight important public problems, it is vital they know the topic they are speaking about if they are to resist the attacks of potential critics.“If you’re a celebrity and you’re going to do it, you better be really well informed on the subject matter, because otherwise I think you do damage to it,” he said, before giving an example.“People like to come in and say, ‘OK, tell me about Minni Minawi [a Darfur rebel leader].’ If you don’t know that sort of thing, then they basically marginalize you? So your job is to be really well informed, so that when somebody tries to put that, you’re able to respond to everything along the way.”Mr. Clooney – who visited Darfur earlier this year – stressed it helps to be “finding and picking your spots and not trying to tell everybody what to think; just trying to spotlight.”He said he was optimistic about the willingness of people, whether well known or not, to support good causes.“I think people, when they have a minute, are actually really good about helping out. I really do think that. And celebrities have the access, so they should do something whenever they can.”Across the UN system there are currently about 80 Goodwill Ambassadors and nine Messengers of Peace. Since the early 1950s the world body has enlisted prominent figures from the spheres of art, music, film, literature and sport to highlight key issues and draw attention to its activities.During the interview, Mr. Clooney also praised the efforts of humanitarian workers from UN agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to assist the people in Darfur, where fighting between Government forces, allied militias and rebel groups has displaced nearly 2 million people since 2003 and led to scores of thousands of civilian deaths.“It’s shocking how brave these people are,” he said, noting the conditions he witnessed in many of the camps for Darfur’s internally displaced persons (IDPs) where the aid workers operate. read more

Recorder of London Nicholas Hilliard QC referred the case to the Attorney General in October.Attorney General Geoffrey Cox QC announced earlier this month that it was in the public interest to bring fresh proceedings against Robinson. Last year Robinson was jailed for 10 months for contempt of court and a three-month suspended sentence he was previously handed for another contempt conviction was activated. He had filmed defendants from a Huddersfield grooming gang outside Leeds Crown Court during their trial then published the footage on Facebook, breaching a reporting restriction which prevented publishing any details of the case until all trials had concluded. The video he streamed, which lasted for around 90 minutes, was watched more than 250,000 times.Judge Geoffrey Marson QC told Robinson while sentencing him that the footage had the potential to cause a long-running trial to be derailed at the cost of “hundreds and hundreds of thousands of pounds” of taxpayers’ money.Robinson’s contempt of court conviction was quashed by Court of Appeal judges in August last year and he was released after serving two months of his sentence. They ruled that the decision to commit him to prison “so promptly” and without “due regard” to rules governing procedures surrounding someone alleged to have acted in contempt of court “gave rise to unfairness”. Andrew Caldecott QC, representing the Attorney General, told the Old Bailey that Mr Cox had particular “concerns” about two parts of the footage, during which Robinson tells the defendants their faces will be seen by millions of people.Mr Caldecott said the Attorney General was “extremely concerned” by Robinson’s conduct in the video and that it should “in no way be considered acceptable”.He added: “Social media has the ability to reach millions of people in a very short time and it is very clear that is what the respondent wanted and intended to happen.”Robinson’s legal team said the case raised “serious issues” about what civilians and members of the press are allowed to report when covering criminal proceedings, and asked the judges to consider proportionality of punishment to offence when making a decision. Lady Justice Sharp, sitting with Mr Justice Warby, granted the Attorney General’s application to bring committal proceedings against Robinson. His next hearing will be on 4 July at the Old Bailey.Robinson is standing for election as an independent Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the North West region of England in the European elections later this month. His court appearance comes just weeks after he had two milkshakes thrown over him one day after the other while on the campaign trail. first_imgRain is hardly heartening news for Dhaka residents nowadays. Rains mean a water-logging. Memories of last year’s monsoon are still fresh in the memory of the city dwellers. Nothing has changed. In the fourth week of June, a few hours rain caused floods in several areas of Dhaka. Roads and alleys were inundated with the dirty sewerage water at Chankharpul, Siddheswari, Malibagh, Maghbazar, Tejgaon. It was impossible to cross several roads because the rain had caused dirty water to flood the streets.Prices of essentials shoot up and small businesses suffer. The city roads become excessively difficult for the physically challenged. It is not uncommon for motorcyclists to fall off their bikes into the dirty water. Passengers have to pay higher fare to commute short distances. first_imgBritish Prime Minister Theresa May warned Monday that mainstream politicians must better address public concerns about inequality, immigration and globalisation, or risk losing power to the “politics of division”.Six months after she took office following Britain’s deeply divisive vote to leave the European Union, May said the government should step up to build a stronger, more cohesive society.“We know what happens when mainstream centre-ground politics fails—people embrace the fringe, the politics of division and despair,” the Conservative leader said in a major speech in London.“They turn to those who offer easy answers, who claim to understand people’s problems, and always know what and who to blame.“We see those fringe voices gaining prominence in some countries across Europe today. Voices from the hard left and far right stepping forward and sensing that this is their time.“But they stand on the shoulders of mainstream politicians who have allowed unfairness and division to grow by ignoring the legitimate concerns of ordinary people for too long.”May’s premiership has so far been dominated by preparations for Brexit, as negotiations on the divorce are due to begin with the EU by the end of March.Referencing a speech she made when she took office, May said the referendum vote was partly driven by a sense that people “felt locked out of the political and social discourse in Britain”.Wage stagnation, concern about immigration, job insecurity and the cost of housing must be addressed, she said, repeatedly calling for “solidarity” in society. In a break from Conservative leaders in the past, May said government must step up to address Britain’s generational, financial and geographical divisions. She has promised action on the cost of housing to ease younger people’s concerns, and a new industrial strategy that would help distribute jobs and wealth from London and the prosperous southeast of England across the country.last_img read more

first_imgGABRIEL C. PÉREZ / KUTResidents wait to get help enrolling for health insurance through Obamacare at Foundation Communities in North Austin in 2016.The Trump administration recently announced big cuts to a program that helps people sign up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.Ahead of open enrollment, which starts later this year, the money Texas gets to hire navigators – people who help residents find insurance plans – is getting slashed 86 percent. For the enrollment period ending in January, Texas groups will be able to apply for only up to $1.25 million in federal funds.“That’s a drop in the bucket,” says Stacey Pogue, a senior policy analyst with the Center for Public Policy Priorities. “That is a tiny amount. It would not go very far when you’re talking about more than 4 million uninsured Texans.”Pogue says it’s also a small number compared to how much the state has been given in years prior. According to data compiled by the Kaiser Family Foundation, Texas was allotted $9.2 million in navigator grants during the 2016-17 enrollment period.Kori Hattemer, director of financial programs with Foundation Communities in Austin, leads the biggest navigator program in Central Texas. The process of getting a health insurance plan can be complicated.“We educate people on all of the different plan options,” Hattemer says. “And then we are open year-round to help people overcome any barriers to actually accessing health care and using their health insurance.”Hattemer says getting a plan through the individual marketplace, which was created through Obamacare, can be tough for anyone. In fact, she says, she’s heard of people losing out on tax credits they’re eligible for because they didn’t fill out the application right.“A lot of the people who come in and ask for our help have tried to do it on their own and were unable to – or their application was done incorrectly, even if they had someone from the marketplace help them,” she says. “And so we are able to make corrections.”And while Foundation Communities, which serves Central Texas, doesn’t rely on federal funds, Hattemer says she’s worried about organizations in other parts of the state that do.Pogue says this big cut to funding for navigator groups means there will also be less education and outreach to people who may not know what’s going on.“When navigator funding is cut even more and there are so few resources left in Texas, we will have many more people who are eligible who could be getting help, who could get a plan that meets their needs,” Pogue says, “and won’t know that it exists, won’t know that there’s financial assistance, won’t know the deadline to enroll and will miss out on coverage because they simply lacked awareness.”Pogue says these cuts are part of the Trump administration’s larger effort to weaken the health care law.She says this particular cut, though, hurts people who are vulnerable and live in hard-to-reach areas. Cities like Austin, which have groups like Foundation Communities, won’t feel the cuts as much as rural parts of the state. Sharelast_img read more

ROME (AP) – A U.N. agency has warned that a livestock epidemic in Congo that has killed more than 75,000 goats is the worst in a decade and is now threatening goats and sheep in neighboring countries. The disease, called peste de petit ruminants, or PPR, is highly lethal, with an 86 percent mortality rate among goats. It is caused by a virus that is similar to measles in humans. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said 1 million goats and 600,000 sheep are at risk of contracting the disease. To protect them, farmers have been moving their herds away from infected villages, but that has only spread the epidemic to healthy flocks of animals. 0 Comments   Share   Arizona families, Arizona farms: working to produce high-quality milk Sponsored Stories Think Tank analyzes the second round of Democratic debates New high school in Mesa lets students pick career pathscenter_img More Valley freeways to be closed this weekend for improvements Meghan McCain to release audiobook on conservatism, family Top Stories Early signs of cataracts in your parents and how to help The vital role family plays in societylast_img read more

That number will fluctuate during the year as some people get jobs that offer coverage, and others decide to drop their insurance.Although it exceeds a target of 9.1 million set last year by HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell, it’s not much of a cushion. “Enrollment has been lower and slower than what most people projected,” said Caroline Pearson of the data analysis firm Avalere Health.Still, the combination of subsidized private coverage sold through online insurance exchanges in every state, along with Medicaid expansion in most states, has resulted in historic coverage gains.Nearly 9 out of 10 adults now have health insurance — about the same proportion of Americans who buckle their seatbelts.Health insurance is now a federal mandate for most people, with employer plans remaining as the mainstay for workers and their families. Violators risk fines and penalties.A major private survey, the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, found 88 percent of U.S. adults have coverage. The new health insurance numbers could be just an ephemeral high-water mark if the Supreme Court invalidates subsidies for people in states using HealthCare.gov, the federal government’s online exchange. Top Stories center_img New Valley school lets students pick career-path academies Four benefits of having a wireless security system — Florida would be the biggest loser if the Supreme Court overturns subsidies, with 1.3 million residents losing nearly $390 million a month in financial assistance. The subsidies are delivered as tax credits and paid directly to insurers on behalf of consumers.— Texas, North Carolina and Georgia would be the next three states hardest hit. In Texas, more than 830,000 people would lose subsidies; likewise for nearly 460,000 North Carolinians, and more than 410,000 residents of Georgia.— Overall, 87 percent of the customers in states that would bear the consequences of the court ruling are receiving subsidies. In one of those states, Pennsylvania, Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf is moving to take over the operation of the health insurance marketplace as a bulwark against the potential loss of subsidies. Coverage for nearly 350,000 residents is at stake. The Obama administration says it expects to win in court and officials say there is no backup plan if they lose the case. Leading congressional Republicans are promising to help consumers who lose subsidies, but it’s unclear Congress could pass any fix that Obama would sign.“After a rocky start, the marketplaces are now generally stable, with steady growth in enrollment,” said Larry Levitt of the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation. “A court decision for the challengers would roil the relatively calm waters.” Milstead says best way to stop wrong-way incidents is driving sober In the 34 states most directly affected, nearly 6.4 million people could lose subsidies worth more than $1.7 billion a month. Without financial assistance, it’s expected that most of those consumers would drop coverage. As healthy people exit the market, premiums would spike for the remaining customers buying individual health insurance policies. The court case revolves around the literal meaning of a handful of words in the complex law.Opponents say the law only allows subsidies in states that set up their own insurance exchanges. Only 13 states and Washington, D.C., are running their own markets this year. The administration says that, when read in context, the law allows subsidies in all 50 states regardless of whether the federal HealthCare.gov is in charge of sign-ups.If the Supreme Court invalidates the subsidies, Republican-led states that have resisted “Obamacare” would bear the brunt of the coverage losses. Of the 34 states most affected, 26 have GOP governors.Nationally, 8.7 million people are getting an average of $272 a month, which covers most of their premiums. The national figure includes residents of states running their own insurance markets. Here are some highlights from the report: Former Arizona Rep. But Ponce is already planning to use it as a platform to draw attention toward high rates of suicides among trans teenagers, as well as legal codes that still discriminate against them around the world.“If my going through all this contributes to the world moving a little step forward, then that’s a personal crown that will always accompany me,” Ponce told The Associated Press at the offices of the Miss Universe franchise in central Madrid. The Spanish capital has just wrapped up its 2018 week-long pride celebrations, whose main theme was a call for equality and greater visibility for people with non-binary gender identity. Rights campaigners marching last Saturday welcomed the World Health Organization’s recent move to take trans identities off the official list of mental health disorders, but highlighted discrimination faced by transgender people of all ages, including employment discrimination.A study published last year by the European transgender group TGEU found that 77.5 per cent of 885 transgender people over 16 years-old polled in Georgia, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Sweden had considered taking their own lives and that 24.5 per cent of respondents had made at least one attempt.Ponce said she had suffered discrimination before as a model, being rejected for fashion events or shoots once designers or organizers discovered she had undergone a sex reassignment procedure. But in those moments, she said her life motto — “To be the best is not an option, is a must” — gave her strength. She said her experience growing up in a “loving and supporting family” but without any role models in a small town in southern Spain, near Sevilla, can be a useful story for others.“My parents never had to go to school to demand any changes in attitudes, I did it myself,” Ponce said, highlighting how she would meet aside with every new teacher and tell them: “Whatever name appears in the roll call, you should call me Angela.”The 1.77-meter (5 foot, 11 inch) model’s career took off after she won a provincial beauty award in 2015, reaching new heights last month with the Miss Universe pageant.“I closed my eyes,” she said recalling the victory. “All I wanted was to feel how they put on the crown because I was aware that it was a historical moment.”In 2012, 23-year-old Jenna Talackova was banned from Canada’s Miss Universe pageant for not being a “naturally born” female. The organization — run at the time by now U.S. President Donald Trump — changed the regulations after she threatened legal action. Talackova made it to the shortlist in Canada, but didn’t win entry to the international contest.Six years later, Ponce says that transphobia remains a global problem, even in Spain, a country she sees as a pioneer in the protection of LGBT rights. After Ponce’s victory in the Spanish beauty title, she received hundreds of messages of support on social media, but also some criticism — even from some feminist, gay or transgender users who decried beauty pageants in general as objectification.“We can’t be hypocritical,” said Ponce, rejecting the charges and describing her victories as success for all transgender people. “Beauty is used to sell everything around us, and beauty can also help us spread a message of equality.”last_img read more

MGM has made a series of significant moves, including the multiyear deal with the NBA and WNBA.Earlier this year, bookmaker William Hill reached agreements that allow odds and other promotional efforts at the home arenas of the Las Vegas Golden Knights and the New Jersey Devils.“We couldn’t be more excited to enter into this historic partnership with the NHL,” MGM Resorts Chairman and CEO Jim Murren said.NHL executive vice-president and chief revenue officers Keith Wachtel said being able to provide enhanced data and analytics to MGM will allow “some creative and unique things that don’t really exist in the sport right now.”“The more data and analytics that a gaming operator can have, the better it will be in enabling them to set odds,” Wachtel told The Associated Press. “Whether or not they’re using the data for actual purposes of creating prop bets and things like that certainly is something (that’s possible). But more importantly, they’re going to use it to be able to set odds and proper odds that they’re going to be able to create.”Some leagues, including the Major League Baseball and the NBA, had called for an “integrity fee” — essentially, states would give leagues a cut of the money wagered on their games to pay for expanded monitoring of suspicious betting and to protect their intellectual property. The effort has been largely unsuccessful thus far.“We have no concerns about the integrity of our game, of our players, our officials,” Wachtel said. “We’ve never had an issue. Secondly, the integrity of the sports betting landscape is just as important to the bookmakers, which is why the NHL does not have a discussion and we don’t talk about this notion of integrity fees.”Scott Butera, MGM Resorts’ president of interactive gaming and a former Arena Football League commissioner, outlined how the puck and playing tracking data will help bettors.“If I know one player is faster than the other, if I know one expends less energy than the other, if I know one has a faster slap shot than the other, it gives me information that I can bet,” he said. “If I’m betting on who will score the most goals, I have that tool. Ultimately when enough data is collected on that, we’ll be able to actually bet on that data itself. So you could have a bet on which player’s going to have the highest average slap shot throughout the game.”Butera said MGM believes expanded sports betting will eventually be available in 25 to 30 states. The 24 U.S.-based NHL teams play in 18 different states, with seven more in Canada. The league is moving toward adding a 32nd team, in Seattle and what would be its 19th state (Washington).
