Dan Cohen AUTHOR Urban Land Institute has called the redevelopment of the former Philadelphia Navy Yard one of the “most successful” projects in U.S. history. The Navy Yard has attracted more than 150 companies and 12,000 employees since the project began more than 15 years ago, reported CBS Philly. To date, the 1,200-acre waterfront campus has focused on the office, industrial/manufacturing, and research and development sectors. But now PIDC, Philadelphia’s public-private economic development corporation and the project’s master developer, is planning to take the redevelopment in a new direction.“I think you should look forward to hopefully a residential component being layered into the development, so we can create a really urban place at the Navy Yard,” said PIDC President John Grady.“A place where people can live and work and have recreation and amenities. I think you will look for more connections with our mass transit system and better connecting the Navy Yard to the rest of the city and the region,” Grady said.Urban Land Institute cited the Navy Yard’s college campus-like feel, the buildings’ architecture, green design and recreational spaces, according to the story.

If the transmission fails, the car isn’t going anywhere. That’s not exactly expected vehicle behavior, hence Toyota’s latest recall.Toyota on Thursday issued a recall for the 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback. Approximately 3,400 vehicles are included in this recall, but Toyota did not say if they share similarities like build dates or anything. The problem comes from the hatchback’s continuously variable transmission. There is a chance the torque converter could fail, and if that happens, the vehicle won’t be able to accelerate forward. If this happens at higher speeds, it could increase the chance of a collision. The fix isn’t necessarily complicated, but it does require a bit of heavy lifting. In order to remedy the issue, dealership technicians will replace the CVT in its entirety with a new CVT featuring a revised torque converter. Since it’s a recall, the work will be completed with no charge to the owner — that said, it may take a few hours to slap that new CVT in there, so don’t expect a lightning-fast swap.Toyota is currently sourcing the parts for the recall. Owners should receive recall notifications via first-class mail by the middle of February. A lawsuit that was filed by nearby residents is set for May 15th, but attorney Cris Feldman says they’re now asking for a hearing in a separate action. Listen X “Residents are asking that Section 30-11 of the Municipal Code be invoked. That provision allows for a hearing on the sound permit. In papers publicly filed by White Oak Music Hall, they state it would be impossible — and they actually italicize the term ‘impossible’ — to keep their music to 75 decibels at the perimeter of their property.” But Diana Pfeifer of the Lindale Park area says the music hall has been forthcoming about its plans when it first presented its Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU. “White Oak Music Hall never hid the fact that they wanted to have an outdoor venue, and that’s why components like sound and parking and traffic were included in the MOU.” Attorney Feldman says the citizens he represents are not asking that the indoor stages be shut down — only that the hearing be held on the sound permit allowing outdoor amplified music. “Anyone listening to this podcast is probably familiar with the acceleration in cord-cutting, and perhaps even more serious is the fact that lots of younger people are not connecting the cord to begin with,” Ryan said.Pluto is trying to capitalize on this trend — by offering free linear programming on mobile platforms — while sticking to the belief that channel surfing is human nature.“One of the misconceptions over the past few years is that everything’s moving to on-demand, and one of our core theses is actually that the linear use — the programmed use case — is alive and well and will remain alive and well in the digital space because people fundamentally want to be programmed to.”“Strictly Business” is Variety‘s weekly podcast featuring conversations with industry leaders about the business of entertainment. Listen to the podcast below for the full interview, or check out previous “Strictly Business” episodes featuring comedian/actor/producer Kevin Hart, ICM Partners agent Esther Newberg, and HBO chairman/CEO Richard Plepler. A new episode debuts each Tuesday and can be downloaded on iTunes, Google Play, Stitcher, and SoundCloud. “We are one of many players, but I think we’re quite a differentiated player,” Ryan said. “When we launched the service live in 2014, everyone said, ‘Everything is going on-demand, and subscription is the only way to do it.’ We had a different opinion about delivering a programmed, linear-ized experience — or leading with it at least — and also going free, which we also saw as an underappreciated opportunity.”Pluto TV offers a mix of channels that span multiple networks — like News 24/7, which aggregates different networks’ takes on news stories — as well as content from singular networks like NBC or Scripps. While Ryan advocated for the consumer appeal of having options, he also acknowledged the decreasing popularity of linear programming. Pluto TV isn’t concerned about the growing number of cord-cutting consumers seeking content via paid streaming options. In this week’s episode of the Variety podcast “Strictly Business,” Pluto CEO Tom Ryan expressed his faith in the OTT service, which delivers hundreds of channels to more than 6 million users for free. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. October 7, 2014 3 min read If you have one too many cards to keep track of, payment startup Plastc purports to have the solution: a single card that holds all of your pertinent information, from credit and gift cards to electronic key access. Users can store up to 20 cards (though not a driver’s license). The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company was launched in January 2013. The patent-pending, waterproof Plastc cards — which have e-ink displays and can be swiped through like an e-reader — are now available to pre-order and will begin shipping summer 2015. The card costs $155 and runs on a rechargeable, wireless battery. There are no additional fees when a customer uses the Plastc card. Related: 4 Things Businesses and Consumers Need Before They Adopt Mobile PaymentsThe company is also showcasing a smartphone app on the site called Plastc Wallet that links up with the card and alerts a user when they make a purchase. For concerns about security and privacy, the app requires the pin number and facial recognition to access data. And if it seems like a card that contains all of your identifying and financial information is just asking to get lost, the app alerts you if you get too far from the card. If you do lose it, the company says on the site that it locks up and can be remotely wiped clean.Related: Bill Gates: Bitcoin Is ‘Better Than Currency’So what does this mean for the mobile payments space now? Apple’s new digital wallet service Apple Pay is being touted as a game changer before it is even announced, and it is entering a growing field that includes Amazon, the newly independent PayPal, and startups like Square, Stripe and Plastc’s more direct competition, Coin. The Verge reports that the two-year-old Coin which announced its card back in November with plans to begin shipping the eight-card storage product this summer — but it hasn’t made an appearance yet.Related: Apple Pay May Be the Creative Leap That Outmaneuvers SamsungPlastc cards come equipped with a barcode, magnetic strip, a pin number you key in on the display, and an EMV chip (a fraud-prevention technology). As of now, Coin cards do not support that chip. This a vital difference between the two companies, in Plastc’s favor. By October 2015, retailers and restaurants must transition over to chip cards — if they don’t want to be held liable for counterfeit fraud. So if a business continues to accept magnetic-stripe credit cards after this deadline, they will be held responsible for any fraudulent activity. While it is still too early to determine which platform will win out, the evolution of the credit card is putting these companies on notice.
