first_imgEnlarge ImageIt’s unlikely that Aston Martin’s no-deal Brexit survival plan includes building further V8 Cygnets, unfortunately. Aston Martin While we’re up to our ears here in the US with partial government shutdowns and wall talk, the folks over in the UK are staring down the barrel of a possible no-deal Brexit, in which Britain leaves the EU without a trade deal. The prospect has companies such as Aston Martin taking emergency measures to stay afloat, Reuters reports. The UK is set to leave the EU on March 29. The country’s Prime Minister Theresa May has negotiated a trade deal with the EU but has yet to win support for it in Parliament. Her government on Tuesday suffered defeat over a related finance measure, The Guardian reports. Without a deal, shipments to and from Europe are likely to be severely delayed. The Aston Martin top brass decided at a board meeting in December to enact its no-deal Brexit contingency plan — one which we can only imagine is called something super cool like Condition Aubergine or the Condor Contingency. It will mean major changes to the way the company operates on a day-to-day basis, according to Reuters.Specifically, Aston Martin will use ports other than Dover in an effort to avoid customs delays, and it has authorized its procurement people to use air freight when shipping components from certain vendors.Aston Martin — like many automakers — runs on a just-in-time manufacturing system when it comes to getting the materials it needs to build its cars. Naturally, having the kinds of delays that are expected if a no-deal Brexit happens would pee in Aston Martin’s Wheaties, figuratively speaking. This would likely cause massive production upset, something which a relatively small independent company like Aston Martin can’t afford. The company is also holding on to an inventory of cars in Germany that it will likely augment in the coming weeks, in an effort to avoid post-Brexit costs and paperwork.Aston Martin didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. 0 2019 Aston Martin Vantage: V8 power and elegant style More From Roadshow 2020 BMW M340i review: A dash of M makes everything better 25 Photos Aston Martin Share your voicecenter_img Post a comment 2020 Kia Telluride review: Kia’s new SUV has big style and bigger value 2020 Hyundai Palisade review: Posh enough to make Genesis jealous Tags Car Industry Luxury cars Exotic Cars Performance Cars Aston Martinlast_img read more

A lawsuit that was filed by nearby residents is set for May 15th, but attorney Cris Feldman says they’re now asking for a hearing in a separate action. Listen X “Residents are asking that Section 30-11 of the Municipal Code be invoked. That provision allows for a hearing on the sound permit. In papers publicly filed by White Oak Music Hall, they state it would be impossible — and they actually italicize the term ‘impossible’ — to keep their music to 75 decibels at the perimeter of their property.”   But Diana Pfeifer of the Lindale Park area says the music hall has been forthcoming about its plans when it first presented its Memorandum of Understanding, or MOU. “White Oak Music Hall never hid the fact that they wanted to have an outdoor venue, and that’s why components like sound and parking and traffic were included in the MOU.”   Attorney Feldman says the citizens he represents are not asking that the indoor stages be shut down — only that the hearing be held on the sound permit allowing outdoor amplified music. first_imgEd Potillo is the chairman of the Ward 7 Democrats. (Courtesy Photo)Ed Potillo, vice chairman of the D.C. Democratic State Committee and the chairman of the Ward 7 Democrats, is seeking to unseat Ward 7 D.C. Council member Yvette Alexander in the June 14, 2016 primary. Alexander has held the position since 2007; however Potillo is confident he can pull off the upset.“We can do this,” Potillo said at his campaign kick-off on Oct. 17 in the Southeast quadrant of Ward 7. “We can absolutely do this. If you stay with me, I will be your council member and your first line of defense.Potillo formed an exploratory committee in April. In his speech to 30 supporters, he bemoaned the ward’s political state. “Mediocrity is the current state of the ward,” he said, promising to fight to improve Ward 7 schools, help seniors age in place, and pledging to work to make public transportation user-friendly.Potillo said school houses have fallen in disrepair and neglect” and pointed out that many school-aged children aren’t educated in the ward. “Forty-four percent of school-aged children in Ward 7 go to school outside of the ward,” he said. “The answer is not closing community schools.”Potillo said he will work for strong parental engagement in each of the ward’s schools and overall, champion the interests of all Ward 7 residents. “I will take that fighting spirit to the Wilson Building,” he said, speaking of the District’s city hall. “We’ve waited long enough. I’m here to collect.”Potillo, a native of D.C., graduated from St. John’s College High School in Northwest and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is presently employed with the National Alliance of Black School Educators, as its conference and membership director. A longtime member of the Ward 7 Democrats, he was appointed in 2007 as the chairman of the Program Committee and as the organization’s chairman in 2011.Some activists in the ward question whether Potillo can continue in his role as chairman of the Ward 7 Democrats while running against Alexander, saying it is a conflict of interest to be a candidate and lead all of the ward’s Democrats.Potillo disputes that assertion. “It’s been done and it isn’t a conflict of interest,” he said. “I will stay in my position.”Ambrose Lane, the chairman of the Ward 7 Health Alliance Network and a Potillo supporter, agrees. “He doesn’t have to step down,” Lane said.  “Council member Brandon Todd was the president of the Ward 4 Democrats and he didn’t step down to run for the council seat and neither should Ed. It is not a prerequisite.“We have one of the highest disease rates in the city and she is the chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee but nothing has been done for Ward 7 residents,” he said. “How can you be the chairman of that committee and ignore the health needs of your ward?”Gloria Keaton has her concerns about Alexander, also. “I am a lifelong resident of Marshall Heights and my neighborhood is an afterthought,” Keaton said bluntly. “It seems that we are not as important as Hillcrest.”Milton Steele III, an active figure in the upscale Hillcrest neighborhood, attended Potillo’s kick-off and didn’t make a commitment to support the candidate. Nevertheless, Steele said that the ward needs a unifying political leader. “We need someone who will make Ward 7 one,” he said. “We need somebody that will bring everybody together, whether they live in Hillcrest, Penn Branch or Fairfax Village.”Alexander and J.R. Meyers, her former chief of staff believed to be part of the council member’s expected re-election effort, didn’t return the AFRO requests for comment before deadline.Former D.C. Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe said he is seriously considering running for the Ward 7 council seat and had no comment for the AFRO on Potillo’s campaign. The political talk in the ward has former D.C. Council Chairman Kwame Brown and former D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray as possible challengers to Alexander, too.last_img read more

first_imgA damning report has found that a third of the District’s public high school graduates last year missed too many classes or did not properly make up their classes, findings officials fear could cheapen the value of public high school diplomas from D.C.“We very much are committed to putting out the news, the good the bad, or the ugly,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said during her Jan. 30 Mayor’s Breakfast. “None of us around this table who have been very committed to the transformation of our schools wins with fake numbers. And certainly, our children don’t win with fake numbers.”Dunbar High School had one of the highest rates of graduating students who did not meet attendance requirements. The others are Anacostia High School, Ballou High School, Eastern High School, Roosevelt High School and H.D. Woodson High School. (Courtesy photo)The D.C. City Council has scheduled a hearing for Feb. 8 with government witnesses to discuss next steps.  Meanwhile, Chancellor Antwan Wilson has rolled out reforms that include transcript reviews to ensure the class of 2018 has earned the grades required to graduate.DCPS will work to improve grading and credit recovery policies by next school year while showing the importance of attendance. By May, DCPS will have a plan to regularly audit grading practices in the high schools, implement a new student information system allowing school leaders, teachers and families to monitor student grades, attendance, and information, and have a process in place to regularly train new staff on policies.Plans are also in place for resource fairs focused on students and families to receive support for school success and attendance. Looking ahead to 2022, DCPS will offer stronger final exams for core courses while offering support for students who fail.“I’m committed to ensuring that our students here in D.C. get what they deserve and that is the opportunity to know that they are privileged for growing up in D.C. and having attended our schools,” said Wilson, chancellor for 11 months. The audit, conducted by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education and released Jan. 29, discovered policy violations in 937 out of 2,758 graduating students’ records at nearly all schools. In Dunbar High School’s case, more than 4,000 changes were made to attendance records for 118 graduates, the report said. The Washington Post reported that the Dunbar principal has been removed from the school. Most high schools operated under a mindset of passing and graduating students, according to a DCPS concurrent review of attendance and grading policies. At Ballou High School, DCPS uncovered a culture of doing “whatever it takes” to pass students so they could receive diplomas. The DCPS review found that six high schools were the worst offenders at graduating students who exceeded the number of absences allowed, and failed to follow DCPS grading and credit recovery policies. Those schools were Anacostia High School, Ballou High School, Dunbar High School, Eastern High School, Roosevelt High School and H.D. Woodson High School.Ballou Principal Yetunde Reeves was removed from her position and Dunbar Principal Abdullah Zaki was placed on leave in the wake of the allegations.DCPS Central Office failed to offer sufficient training and support or adequate oversight in grading and credit recovery policies, the DCPS review said.Despite the sobering news, Bowser remains confident that the district has improved dramatically in the 10 years since the mayor took over the schools. She dodged a question on whether investigators interviewed former chancellor Kaya Henderson and then-interim chancellor John Davis.Bowser ordered the audit and an internal review of DCPS policies and procedures in December following a  November report from NPR and WAMU that unearthed a graduation scandal at Ballou. The joint investigation found that the high school was graduating students with repeated absences and others who couldn’t read and write. DCPS has since removed Principal Yetunde Reeves from the school.Councilwoman Mary Cheh took DCPS to task over a school culture she said discourages teachers and principals from coming forward to report malfeasance.“They don’t want to rock the boat because the culture, it’s almost totalitarian from the central office, they don’t want to stick their neck out,” Cheh said. “They feel, maybe they’re not correct, but they certainly feel that there will be reprisals and that they just have to be quiet.”Wilson is putting a system in place that allows school staff to lodge complaints directly to him and intimidation from school leaders is not acceptable, he said.At the upcoming hearing on Feb. 8, David Grosso chairman of the committee on education, wants to understand why some students have attendance issues, an answer that’s eluded officials for years, he said.“I look forward to the opportunity for us to work together to get to the solutions that we need to get to so that students feel like school is the best option in the morning when they get up,” Grosso said. “And that’s the challenge that we have before us.”last_img read more
