first_imgAfghan medical staff treat a wounded women, after a car bomb exploded near the old Interior Ministry building, at Jamhuriat Hospital in Kabul on 27 January, 2018. Photo: AFPAn explosives-packed ambulance blew up in a crowded area of Kabul on Saturday, killing at least 63 people and wounding 151 others, officials said, in one of the biggest blasts to rock the war-torn city in recent years. The Taliban-claimed assault — the second carried out by the militant group in the Afghan capital in a week — triggered chaotic scenes as terrified survivors fled the area scattered with body parts and blood, and hospitals were overwhelmed by the large number of wounded. It came as both the insurgents and the Islamic State group have escalated their attacks on Kabul, one of the deadliest places in Afghanistan for civilians. An AFP reporter saw “lots of dead and wounded” civilians in the Jamuriate hospital, which is metres away from the blast and where medical staff struggled to treat the bloodied men, women and children lying on the floor in corridors.”The latest toll has reached 63 dead and 151 wounded,” Baryalai Hilali, the director of the government media centre, told reporters.Hilali warned the death toll might rise as some of the wounded brought to hospitals were in a “critical condition”.The blast happened in an area where several high-profile organisations, including the European Union, have offices. Members of the EU delegation in Kabul were in their “safe room” and there were no casualties, an official told AFP.The force of the explosion shook windows of buildings at least two kilometres (more than a mile) away and caused some low-rise structures in the immediate vicinity to collapse. The suicide bomber passed through at least one checkpoint in the ambulance, saying he was taking a patient to Jamuriate hospital, an interior ministry spokesman told AFP.”At the second checkpoint he was recognised and blew his explosive-laden car,” Nasrat Rahimi said.Rahimi told a news conference that most of the victims were civilians. He said the Taliban-affiliated Haqqani Network was responsible and four suspects had been arrested.Twenty minutes before the blast an AFP reporter saw police checking ambulances several hundred metres from the scene of the explosion, as the drivers and patients stood on the street. Ambulances are rarely checked in the city. The Taliban used social media to claim responsibility for the attack, which comes exactly a week after its insurgents stormed Kabul’s landmark Intercontinental hotel, killing at least 25 people, the majority foreigners.- ‘Massacre’ -Photos shared on social media purportedly of the blast — the deadliest in Kabul since a truck bomb ripped through the city’s diplomatic quarter on May 31, killing 150 people and wounding hundreds — showed a huge plume of smoke rising into the sky.Near the blast site civilians walked through debris-covered streets carrying wounded on their backs as others loaded several bodies at a time into ambulances and private cars to take them to medical facilities around the city. The Italian NGO Emergency said 131 wounded had been taken to its hospital, with its coordinator Dejan Panic tweeting that it had been a “massacre”.A photo posted on Emergency’s Twitter account showed hospital staff treating injured people in an outdoor walkway next to a garden.A man told Ariana TV he had taken his wounded brother to Jamuriate and Emergency hospitals but had been turned away.”They are asking people with non-life threatening wounds to go to other hospitals,” he said.Aminullah, whose stationery shop is just metres from where the explosion happened, said the force of the explosion shook the foundations of his building.”The building shook. All our windows broke. The people are in shock in our market,” he told AFP.A man told Tolo News he was passing the area when the explosion happened.”I heard a big bang and I fainted,” he said, outside the Emergency hospital.”There were dozens of people who were killed and wounded. There were pools of blood.”The attack was condemned by the presidential palace as a “crime against humanity”. There was international outcry too, with NATO, the US embassy in Kabul and British foreign minister Boris Johnson among those expressing horror at the latest attack. The offices of the High Peace Council, charged with negotiating with the Taliban which has been waging a more than 16-year insurgency, are also near the blast site.”It targeted our checkpoint. It was really huge — all our windows are broken,” Hassina Safi, a member of High Peace Council, told AFP.”So far we don’t have any reports if any of our members are wounded or killed.”A security alert issued on Saturday morning had warned that the Islamic State group was planning “to conduct aggressive attacks” on supermarkets, shops and hotels frequented by foreigners.last_img read more

first_imgFrench President Emmanuel Macron, flanked by French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian (2R) and UN Special Envoy for Libya, Lebanese Ghassan Salame (L) speaks during an International conference on Libya at the Elysee Palace in Paris, on May 29, 2018. Rival Libyan leaders vying for influence in the fractured and war-scarred country meet in Paris for a major peace conference seen as a risky French-backed push for a political settlement in the country. AFPRival Libyan leaders vying for influence in the fractured and war-scarred country meet in Paris on Tuesday for a major peace conference seen as a risky French-backed push for a political settlement in the country. Many analysts are sceptical that the initiative to invite four senior figures representing Libya’s factions, as well as neighbouring countries and regional powers, can lead to significant progress.Years of mediation by the United Nations, as well as former colonial power Italy, have failed to bring stability to the north African nation which descended into chaos after the ousting of dictator Moamer Kadhafi in 2011.The main focus of the meeting will be on trying to agree a political roadmap committing all parties to hold parliamentary and presidential elections before the end of the year — an approach not favoured by everyone.”I believe that elections are a big risk in a country armed like Libya,” Federica Saini Fasanotti, an analyst with the Washington-based Brookings Institution, told AFP.There are also disagreements over whether a vote on a new constitution, or elections for the presidency and parliament, should come first.”While the Italians, Turkish, Qataris and to a large extent the Americans believe the constitution comes before elections, on the other side, the French, Egyptians and Emiratis want elections first,” Mohamed Eljarh, from the Libya Outlook consulting firm told AFP.Also, despite French efforts to convene all of the leading players in the oil-rich country, militias in and around the city of Misrata have boycotted proceedings, leaving western Libya under-represented at the talks.- Big guestlist -The Libyan invitees include Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, head of the UN-backed unity government in Tripoli, and 75-year-old military strongman Khalifa Haftar, whose rival Libyan National Army dominates the country’s east.Aguila Saleh Issa, the parliament speaker based in the eastern town of Tobruk who opposes the UN-backed administration, is also expected, as is Khalid Al-Mishri, the newly elected head of the High Council of State.Representatives from around 20 countries involved in the Libya crisis have been invited — an acknowledgement that the problems can only be resolved if regional powers agree on a common roadmap. These include Egypt, Russia and the United Arab Emirates which have backed Haftar and the rival administration in Tobruk in the east, not the UN-recognised government based in the capital Tripoli.Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, as well as neighbours Algeria and Tunisia and west African leaders from Niger and Congo will also attend, the French presidency has announced.- Competing interests -European leaders see stabilising Libya as key to tackling jihadist threats and migration from the country which has become a departure point for hundreds of thousands of Africans trying to reach Europe.Macron threw himself into finding a solution shortly after his election in May last year. The 40-year-old French leader brought Sarraj and Haftar together in Paris in July where they agreed a ceasefire and to hold elections in 2018 — a move that irked the Italian government at the time which was blindsided by Macron’s diplomacy. The task of stabilising Libya is complicated by diverging interests among Middle Eastern countries, which have sometimes backed opposing sides in the fighting, as well as competition between European powers.Macron is suspected by some in Italy of organising the conference at a time when France’s southern European neighbour, which has major oil interests in Libya, is facing a serious political crisis.”It’s as if Macron wanted to make the most of the this moment of absence by Italy on the Libyan dossier,” Italian newspaper La Repubblica wrote last week, citing diplomatic sources.France is also suspected by some rivals within Libya of favouring Haftar, a military strongman who has fought Islamist militias and who was recently treated in Paris for an undisclosed ailment.”There is clear apprehension among many in western Libya that the French initiative is an attempt to reinforce the position of Khalifa Haftar as the key power broker in Libya,” Eljarh from Libya Outlook added. The Crisis Group, an NGO that studies conflict zones, also voiced caution about the French conference.”Much more work remains to be done for a peace-building effort in Libya to succeed,” it said on Monday. “For this reason, Crisis Group believes that France should not request that its four Libyan guests sign an accord.”last_img read more

first_imgBy George Kevin Jordan, Special to the AFROBuilding Bridges Across the River (BBAR) and Seeds of Change are partnering up to create a “food-focused” accelerator program to narrow the food gap in the District, especially in Wards 7 and 8. The collaboration, strengthened by a $115,000 grant from Mars, Inc., the organization behind the Seeds of Change Project, will provide food literacy programs, nutrition and farming workshops through the upcoming months at THEARC and several other locations.“What the Seeds of Change sponsorship has been able to do is not only support the producing of food, but inspire the next food producers,” said, Scott Kratz, vice president of Building Bridges Across the River, and director of the 11th Street Bridge Park.Building Bridges Across the River (BBAR) and Seeds of Change have partnered to offer a “food-focused” accelerator program to narrow the food gap in D.C. (Courtesy of Lawrence Green, Time Travel Media)“This is the largest single grant that we’ve received and it allows us to do so much for the community,” Kratz said. “We’re really excited about it.”According to an article by the DC Policy Center more than three-fourths of food deserts are located in Wards 7 and 8. The program will help residents with access to fresh food and offer ways to grow, cook and learn about health foods. There are classes that will focus on composting, herbalism, canning preserving and fermenting and even bee harvesting. Many classes are at THEARC’s main campus located at 1901 Mississippi Avenue S.E. However several classes are located throughout Wards 7 and 8 including The National Children’s Center at 3400 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue S.E., and Kelly Miller Middle School located at 301 49th Street N.E.D.C. is the second U.S. city where Seeds of Change is donating grants and creating programming to address food disparities as part of a larger, country-wide initiative, the first being Chicago, according to Sara Schulte, External Communications Manager of Mars, Incorporated.“We got connected with Scott and BBAR with some other community works through Mars,” Schulte said. “We knew we wanted to get involved in the work they were doing.”“When we look for partners, we look for people who share our mission and who are also focused on providing healthier greener communities. So when we talked to Scott it was such a great fit.”Mars is a family-owned business with more than a century of history making diverse products and offering services, according to their website. In addition, thanks to the SOC sponsorship, BBAR will also be employing an intern to learn about urban agriculture. Tatiana Bogans, 22, a D.C. resident will intern with BBAR until November.“Basically I will be working with the farmers, which includes weeding harvesting, basically keeping the farm together,” Bogans said. “I like working outdoors and I like community work so it was a good fit.”After her internship, Bogans hopes to one day attend the University of the District of Columbia and study environmental science and agriculture.“This is a really good job if you like being outside and giving back to the community,” Bogans said.  All the programming is free and open to the public. The patent-pending, waterproof Plastc cards — which have e-ink displays and can be swiped through like an e-reader — are now available to pre-order and will begin shipping summer 2015. first_img I received an e-mail from reader Johan Kuster yesterday—and he pointed out the following: “When I look at the chart of GDXJ for the last 5 days, I noticed that there is high volume trading at the end of the day and EXACTLY at 3:59 the volume rises to the extreme. Today GDXJ was pushed down close to 3% in 1 minute thanks to somebody selling the stock. This looks like a criminal activity to me. What idiot would sell that amount of shares in 1 minute?“ It could be ‘da boyz’ or day traders.  But whoever they were, they weren’t selling for maximum profits.  Nothing would surprise me, dear reader—and by now this sort of activity shouldn’t surprise anyone.  It looked like the HUI and Silver 7 index suffered from a similar disease yesterday—and it seems to be cropping up more and more.  Here’s the GDXJ chart from yesterday so you can see what he’s referring to. Please send us an email for more information, ir@freegoldventures.com The first photo is of a “Christmas Beetle” that Nick Laird sent my way last night—and this particular variety goes by the Latin name Anoplognathus smaragdinus.  It’s a member of the scarab family—and if you wish to order a mounted specimen, you can do so here. What’s amazing in all of this is that we haven’t heard anything except stony silence from either the World Gold Council or The Silver Institute.  Of course they and their members are all bought and paid for, so hearing nothing should not come as a total surprise.   They’d rather go bankrupt, or lose millions, than admit to the price management scheme, let alone do anything about it. The only miner with gonads big enough to even broach the subject was Keith Neumeyer over at First Majestic Silver.  They’re having their 3rd quarter conference call next Wednesday–and he might have more to say about it at that time. And as I type this paragraph, the London open is about 15 minutes away.  Silver and gold, which the HFT boyz and their algorithms sold down to new lows around 2:30 p.m. Hong Kong time, have now recovered most of those losses, but are still down a bit from Thursday’s close in New York.  Net gold volume is already north of 50,000 contracts—and silver’s net volume is just over 12,000 contracts. Platinum received the same treatment as gold and silver—and came within an eyelash of hitting a new low tick for this move down.  Palladium also got hit, but it still has about $20 to go before it sees a new low. The dollar index peaked out around 88.17 just before 1 p.m. Hong Kong time, is now down 6 basis points as of this writing. Today at 3:30 p.m. EST we get the latest Commitment of Traders Report for positions held at the close of Comex trading on Tuesday—along with the companion Bank Participation Report.  I’m just hoping that all the price/volume data from the Tuesday trading session will have been reported in a timely manner.  Too bad that none of the data from Wednesday will be in either report, as that was a monster capitulation day to the downside in all four precious metals. I’ll have all the data for you in tomorrow’s column. And as I hit the send button on today’s column at 5:10 a.m. EST, I see that the rallies off the early afternoon lows in Far East trading weren’t allowed to get far, as they all got capped at 9 a.m. GMT in London and, with the exception of silver, all are up a bit from yesterday’s close in New York. Net gold volume is now around 65,000 contracts—and silver’s net volume is about 16,000 contracts.  It’s obvious that most of today’s volume so far was associated with the new low prices set in these two metals, as there hasn’t been a lot of volume since I reported on them just before the London open. The dollar index is back to unchanged. Since today is Friday—and we’ve already set new lows in gold and silver in the thinly-traded Far East market earlier today, I’m not even going to hazard a guess as to what might happen in New York, as prices are now completely in the hands of JPMorgan et al—and their HFT buddies. That’s all I have for today—and I’ll see you here tomorrow. The CME Daily Delivery Report showed that only 1 lonely gold contract was posted for delivery within the Comex-approved depositories on Monday. The CME Preliminary Report for the Thursday trading session showed that November open interest in gold increased by 5 contracts to 61 contracts—and November o.i. in silver is now at 102 contracts, down 33 contracts from yesterday because of delivery that was posted yesterday. Not surprisingly, there was another withdrawal from GLD.  This time it was 96,113 troy ounces.  And as of 9:52 p.m. EST yesterday evening, there were no reported withdrawals from SLV. Since yesterday was Thursday, Joshua Gibbons, the “Guru of the SLV Bar List,” updated his website with the in/out movements over at iShares.com for the week ending at the close of business on Wednesday—and here is what he had to report. “Analysis of the 05 November 2014 bar list—and comparison to the previous week’s list:  1,952,482.9 troy ounces were added. No bars were removed or had a serial number change.” “The bars added were from Kazakhmys (0.5M oz), Shui Kou Shan (0.4M oz), Yunnan Copper (0.2M oz), and 8 others.” “The overallocated cannot be calculated, as the monthly withdrawal is factored in the bar list, but was not factored in to the daily iShares reports.  Missing from the bar list is the 2,073,283.6 withdrawal from Tuesday (which includes the approximately 150,000 troy ounce monthly expense withdrawal).“ The link to Joshua’s website is here. There was another sales report from the U.S. Mint yesterday.  They sold 6,500 troy ounces of gold eagles—and 1,500 one-ounce 24K gold buffaloes.  They didn’t report selling any silver eagles, of course—and it remains to be seen if they produce any more this year, as the time to retool for the 2015 silver eagles is coming up hard. Just as an aside here, I’ve heard reports from readers that the premiums on silver eagles have already gone up at their local bullion stores in the U.S.—and our supplier confirmed that, as of yesterday, one U.S. bullion producer has already raised prices across the board for their entire product line. It was another busy day for in/out activity at the Comex-approved depositories on Wednesday.  In gold, 47,104 troy ounces were reported received—and 50,244 troy ounces were shipped out.  The ‘in’ activity was at Canada’s Scotiabank—and the ‘out’ activity was at HSBC USA.  The link to the action is here. In silver, nothing was reported received, but a very decent 937,957 troy ounces were shipped off to parts unknown—and the link to that activity is here. China officially released their September gold import data via Hong Kong through regular channels on their Friday morning—and that enabled Nick Laird to update his charts.  I, along with other commentators, had given up using Hong Kong imports as a proxy for China’s gold consumption.  That still may be the case, but here’s the chart anyway. All was quiet yesterday There was no price activity worthy of the name in Far East trading on their Thursday—and not much in Comex trading either.  But, having said that, the three tiny rallies that did occur—starting with the one at the Comex open—all got sold down before they could get anywhere. The high and low ticks aren’t worth looking up. Gold closed on Thursday in New York at $1,14.30 spot, up $1.30 from Wednesday close.  Net volume was pretty decent at 144,000 contracts. Here’s the 6-month U.S. dollar index chart so you can get the longer-term view.  I don’t know if you’ll agree or not, but it’s my opinion that this rally is getting a little long in the tooth. It will be interesting to see how much gold they import through Hong Kong in October. I have a lot of stories today, and a very decent number of them fall into the must read category—and I hope you have the time for them.  Of course—and as is always the case—the final edit is yours. There has been little to no net selling of real silver from any known source—and all the data indicate net buying or holding (Silver Eagles and ETF flows). The only selling of silver that can be confirmed is the selling and short selling by technical funds on the COMEX over the past few months. At a minimum of 50,000 contracts (250 million oz), the selling by no more than 40 speculative traders in the managed money category equals the entire world production of the primary silver miners. It is not necessary to imagine unknown sources of silver selling when the US Government has openly certified that no more than 40 speculative traders have sold in a few months more than what the world’s primary silver miners produce in a year. Quite frankly, were it not for this certification, I couldn’t begin to explain this sell-off in silver or in any of the other CME metals. I’m not talking about predictions and speculation; I’m talking about the only explanation possible. – Silver analyst Ted Butler: 05 November 2014 All was quiet yesterday, except for the gentle price capping in gold during the New York session and, for a change, there were no new low price ticks set in any of the precious metals. Here are the 6-month price charts for all four precious metals once again. Silver spent the entire Far East and early London trading session shedding 10 cents from its price.  The rally that began at the 8:20 a.m. EST Comex open yesterday, got capped about 10:20 a.m.—and after that, the price traded sideways for the remainder of the day. The price traded within a 25 cent range yesterday and, like gold, the high and low aren’t worth my effort to look up. Silver finished the Thursday trading session at $15.425 spot, up 11 cents on the day.  Net volume was pretty chunky as well, at 40,000 contracts. Platinum and palladium both traded a few dollars higher until the Comex open—and then sold down quietly after that into the 5:15 p.m. EST close of electronic trading  Platinum was closed down another 12 dollars—and palladium finished lower by 8 dollars.  Here are the charts. The dollar index closed late on Wednesday afternoon in New York at 87.47.  From there it traded flat until about 11 a.m. Hong Kong time on their Thursday morning—and then it fell down to 87.19 within an hour or so.  It didn’t do much until the 8:20 a.m. EST Comex open—and then it blasted up to around 87.90 within minutes.  It rallied a bit more after than—and closed the Thursday session at 88.07—up another 60 basis points, at another new record high for this move. It was exactly the same chart pattern in the silver equities.  At their highs, they were up more than 7 percent until a thoughtful soul sold them down in the last forty-five minutes of trading, just like the gold stocks.  Nick Laird’s Intraday Silver Sentiment Index closed up 4.82%. Here’s the New York Spot Gold [Bid] chart on its own, so you can see the very subtle price capping that occurred during the New York trading session yesterday.  It wasn’t much, but it was there. Sponsor Advertisement The gold stocks gapped up about 2 percent at the open in New York yesterday—and hit their highs [up 6 percent at 3:30 p.m.—and in the following forty-minutes the stocks gave up a third of their gains as the HUI finished up only 3.90%.last_img read more

Magazine Contributor –shares Add to Queue 2 min read New Options in Broadband Connectivity High-bandwidth cellular is breaking out all over. Would you believe 7Mbps-plus download speeds? How about 14Mbps-plus? Those are speeds GSM and CDMA networks, respectively, will achieve, says Qualcomm–although not long before late 2007.In the interim, cellular carriers are busy upgrading their pipes to still-zippy 3G minimums of 450Kbps to 800Kbps downstream and 300Kbps to 400Kbps upstream. Carriers say their UMTS and 1xEV-DO revisions of GSM and CDMA, respectively, should cover all major U.S. cities by year-end.Specifically, Cingular Wireless plans to expand its UMTS BroadbandConnect from 16 urban areas to most major markets. Sprint Nextel is upgrading its Power Vision network to a faster EV-DO version with 3.1Mbps bursts that should reach 190 million Americans. And 3G pioneer Verizon Wireless hopes to cover 200 million consumers with the faster EV-DO flavor over its Broadband Access network. Novatel Wirelessand Sierra Wirelessare already shipping the laptop built-ins and PC card receivers for tapping these networks. And the thin selection of 3G-capable smartphones will expand noticeably in coming months. These multibillion-dollar investments may have something to do with Intel’s boast that 1Mbps to 4Mbps mobile WiMAX will arrive in laptops this year, at least three months ahead of schedule. But broadband cellular still has quite a head start, and its relatively low cost, slim hardware profile and unmatched mobility make for a wide-area broadband solution with all the speed most entrepreneurs need. What’s it for? Messaging, web browsing and transferring big graphics files, of course. But the new WAN pipes are also arriving just in time to satisfy our growing interest in streaming video, mobile TV, mapping and navigation. Verizon’s VCast TV service already covers all West Coast urban centers and the Eastern Seaboard from Portland, Maine, to Richmond, Virginia. GPS navigation companies like TeleNavsee the new networks as a long-awaited opportunity to expand into location-based services. Who knows what enterprising entrepreneurs will dream up once the infrastructure is in place?Just don’t blink: 3G is here, and 3.5G and 4G solutions are coming up fast. first_img Is your PC healthy? Don’t be too sure. Think back to when you heard a kerklunk sound coming from the hard drive. Or maybe you remember the last time your Internet connection was down (and I don’t mean just a little depressed). The best way to find out what’s wrong is to take a proactive approach: Check under your PC’s hood with the following mostly free diagnostic tools, and see if anything is amiss–before disaster strikes.Hard Drive HealthHard drives are about as stable as the stock market. The more you know about your drive–the brand-specific idiosyncrasies and the diagnostic sounds that drives produce–the better prepared you are for the inevitable crash. Here are a couple of helpful services and programs.Hard Drive Inspector: This utility is always on guard, monitoring all your drives for spin rate, seek time, and almost 20 other potential problem spots. Hard Drive Inspector gives you technical data, including the drive model, firmware version, and serial number, all things you’ll need to know when calling for warranty support. It displays the hard drive’s temperature in the system tray. If the drive gets too toasty (I have mine set for 120 degrees Fahrenheit), the program can send you an e-mail alert–or, better, automatically put the computer in Standby mode. You can view a summary health report, which typically has enough information for most users; the S.M.A.R.T. report has the details. The program costs $30, but you can download a 15-day trial version of Hard Drive Inspector to get a feel for the tool.DataCent’s Hard Drive Sounds: You shouldn’t hear more than a low hum from your hard drive. But drives don’t know the rules, and they often make weird sounds, emitting thuds, screeches, knocks, or whining. Determining whether one of the sounds means trouble can be, well, troublesome. The data-recovery company DataCent has an extraordinarily helpful site that plays the actual sounds of bad or unstable drive heads, stuck spindles, wobbly bearings, and media with bad spots, to name a few. You can hear your specific drive brand. The company also offers another valuable tool that lists typical hard-drive failures by manufacturer.Broadband Speed TestsDoes your broadband Internet connection feel more like a sluggish dial-up link? Put it to the test by recording your connection speed every 30 minutes or so for a couple of days. Keep a log, and if the speed is nowhere near advertised rates, send the results to your ISP–and raise a ruckus. If you complain vigorously yet politely, chances are good that the provider will have you back at full speed ahead in short order. With all of the following tests, resist the temptation to check e-mail or browse the Web while testing, so as not to alter the results.Quick tip: If any of these online tests don’t work, give me a call for help. Just kidding–instead, make sure you have the current version of the Flash Player; if not, download and install it.DSLReports: The granddaddy of online testing, DSLReports gives you a stack of tests to try. The Speed Test has a cool car-dashboard-like interface that watches your upload and download speeds. You can test your speed by using any of six servers in different locations. You’ll obtain a good average by testing with two; try one close to home and another across the country. If you’re worried about your connection while gaming, use the site’s Line Quality test to look for packet loss and excessive latency. Make sure to register and log in when testing–that way you can compare results months apart.Speedtest.net: You’ll see pretty much the same results from broadband speed testing at Speedtest.net. But this site is quicker to get to than DSLReports, and it has an oh-so-nifty interface, the kind you want to show off when friends are in your office.Internet Connection QualityIn addition to running overall speed tests, you can use other tools and tricks to improve your online experience.VoIP Speed Test: If you’re making phone calls over the Internet, make sure you have the bandwidth–as well as the quality of service–to get decent VoIP sound, using the VoIP Speed Test. The bandwidth analysis tells you the percentage of VoIP service quality to expect from your connection, as well as the number of concurrent VoIP lines your connection can support.Down for Everyone or Just Me: You head for a Web site, but you get an error. I know you’ve said it:”Is the site down, or is it my problem?”Now there’s a way to find out. Type a Web site’s URL into Down for Everyone or Just Me? (a smartly named site, no?), and it will give you the scoop. Very handy–using it keeps you from bothering coworkers or members of your buddy list.Fixes for Wi-Fi woes: If you use Wi-Fi, turning your router’s Quality of Service (QoS) settings on will definitely help with some applications. For more, see our story “Optimize Wi-Fi for VoIP,Video, and Gaming,” which has tips for tweaking the data transmission speeds of your wireless network.More Internet advice: To give your Internet connection a goose, see “Internet Boosters.” And to prepare for the times when your connection gives up the ghost, check out “Five Quick Fixes forInternet Connection Hang-Ups.”Inside Your PC Not everyone can recite the MAC address of their PC’s network card or the driver version for their graphics board (not even me). If your computer is hiccuping, knowing exactly what hardware and system software you have inside your PC is invaluable. For troubleshooting, being armed with such details is ideal: You can pass them along to tech support, to your computer guru (no, definitely not me), or to an online help forum.PC Pitstop: If you want to visit just one site to test your PC, I’d recommend PC Pitstop’s Full Test. This comprehensive tool not only gives you an unbeatable hardware report but also alerts you to various potential problems that could be harming performance. After I used it recently on my machine, PC Pitstop recommended 11 fixes, gave me a 35-count list of system specs, provided an even longer list of installed hardware, told me what drivers I needed to upgrade, tallied almost 40 performance results, and–get this–compared my PC’s ratings with those of all the other computers that PC Pitstop has tested. If you create a free account, you can save the reports and refer back to them. One warning: If you have a pop-up or ad blocker, disable it before starting the tests.Belarc Advisor: You can put your PC on the couch and run the free Belarc Advisor to obtain an inventory of your system’s hardware. But that alone is no big deal. Where Belarc shines is in its comprehensive analysis of the software installed on your PC, including the version numbers.Equally useful is the report of Microsoft security hotfixes that are missing from your system, as well as the list of software licenses. After you run the scan, save the HTML page in a safe spot so that you can refer to it if the worst happens.SIW–System Information for Windows: You can ask the SIW tool anything about your PC–it’ll give you a list of regional settings or scheduled tasks, or which DLLs are loaded and which are shared. How about which video and audio codecs you have installed, or details about your network or open ports? SIW has everything, offering lists that you can easily access from toolbar shortcuts or from a panel with a hierarchy list.By the way, because SIW is a stand-alone utility that you don’t need to install, it’ll run directly from a USB flash drive, a floppy (if you still have one), a burned rescue CD, or a network drive.Be careful: Unless you uncheck the Add Crawler Toolbar to IE and Firefox box during the installation, SIW will automatically install that toolbar and make it your default search provider. Not a cool thing for such a useful tool to do.Steve Bass is a former PC World contributing editor who now publishes a weekly newsletter at TechBite.com . first_imgTesla 3 min read Reuters This story originally appeared on Reuters Fireside Chat | July 25: Three Surprising Ways to Build Your Brand Wall Street Values Tesla Motors at $620,000 Per Car Sold Last Year Add to Queue Learn from renowned serial entrepreneur David Meltzer how to find your frequency in order to stand out from your competitors and build a brand that is authentic, lasting and impactful.center_img 49shares Image credit: Reuters | Beck Diefenbach Company founder and CEO Elon Musk may not mention Tesla Motors Inc.’s  stock price when his electric car company gives its latest financial update on Wednesday, but it will be front and center for investors divided over its seemingly rich valuation. After a rally that ended in April, Tesla’s market capitalization is currently about $31 billion — equivalent to $620,000 for every car it delivered last year, or $63,000 for every car it hopes to produce in 2020.By comparison, General Motors Co.’s $48 billion market value is equivalent to about $4,800 for every vehicle it sold last year.Tesla’s heady valuation — about 125 times the next 12 months of expected earnings — and the implication that shareholders may be overpaying for Musk’s small but fast-growing luxury car company have made the stock a favorite of short sellers.Short sellers borrow shares and then sell them, hoping to buy them back later at a cheaper price.Tesla is among the world’s 10 most-shorted companies by market value, even after an 85 percent rally earlier this year scalded some of those short sellers. In the past month, short bets against Tesla fell by over $1 billion, but are still above $6 billion, according to financial analytics firm S3 Partners.”This is not just day traders coming in and out of the market. This is fundamental guys who have put it in their portfolio and are saying, ‘We don’t believe this valuation is correct,'” said Ihor Dusaniwsky, S3’s head of research.Vilas Capital Management Chief Executive John Thompson, one of those short sellers, said he believes investors underestimate the hurdles Tesla faces trying to rapidly increase production, including the cost to build future high-end robotic assembly lines.”They’re going to have to spend an enormous amount of money on capital expenditures to achieve their long-term goals and they don’t have the money because they don’t have the earnings,” Thompson said. “So they’re going to have to sell stock to finance it.”Musk has promised to turn Tesla’s first net profit by the fourth quarter. After selling 52,000 cars last year, Tesla aims to sell 500,000 annually by 2020.But its stock price suggests investors expect even more aggressive growth. If Tesla shares were to grow 10 percent a year for the next 10 years — not unreasonable for a popular growth company — it would have to reach annual sales of 1.5 million cars at triple GM’s typical $1,000-per-car profit to justify a more moderate price-earnings ratio of 20. Last year GM sold 10 million cars and Ford sold 6.6 million.Tesla could make money in the future selling batteries or autonomous vehicles, but its valuation is questionable nonetheless and leaves no allowance for operational setbacks, said Georgetown University business professor James Angel.”This stock is definitely priced to perfection. If he pulls everything off, it’s probably worth its current value, but there’s a huge amount of execution risk here,” Angel said.Recent problems like malfunctioning doors and glitchy sensors have cast light on the difficulty of quickly expanding production as Tesla prepares to launch its Model 3 sedan next year. When it reports first-quarter results on Wednesday, analysts will watch to see whether it is on track to deliver positive cash flow for 2016 and become profitable.(Additional reporting by Alexandria Sage in San Francisco; Editing by G Crosse and Matthew Lewis) Next Article May 4, 2016 Enroll Now for $5last_img read more

Kaiser Health News, an editorially independent news service, is a program of the Kaiser Family Foundation, a nonpartisan health care policy research organization unaffiliated with Kaiser Permanente. Reviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)Jan 3 2019There seems to be no end in sight for the current partial government shutdown, the third since the beginning of the Trump administration. For the vast majority of the federal government’s public health efforts, though, it’s business as usual. That’s because Congress has already passed five of its major appropriations bills, funding about three-fourths of the federal government, including the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Veterans Affairs. But seven bills are outstanding — including those that fund the Interior, Agriculture and Justice departments — and that puts the squeeze on some important health-related initiatives. The shutdown itself is not about health policies. It’s the result of differences of opinion between the administration and congressional Democrats regarding Trump’s so-called border wall. But it’s far-reaching, nonetheless. Here’s where things stand:Funding for “big-ticket” health programs is already in place, alleviating much of the shutdown’s immediate potential impact. Since HHS funding is set through September, the flagship government health care programs — think Obamacare, Medicare and Medicaid — are insulated. That’s also true of public health surveillance, like tracking the flu virus, a responsibility of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The National Institutes of Health, which oversees major biomedical research, is also fine. It’s a stark contrast to last January’s shutdown, which sent home about half of HHS’s staff. But some other public health operations are vulnerable because of complicated funding streams.  Although the Food and Drug Administration falls under the HHS umbrella, it receives significant funding for its food safety operations through the Department of Agriculture, which is entirely caught up in the shutdown. The USDA provided an estimated $2.9 billion last year to the FDA for these oversight efforts, which involve everything from food recalls to routine facility inspections and cosmetics regulation. Not having those dollars now means, according to the FDA contingency plan, that about 40 percent of the agency — thousands of government workers — is furloughed. The FDA’s responsibilities for drug approval and oversight are funded by user fees and are not affected. Regulation of tobacco products is also continuing.Health services for Native Americans are also on hold.Because Congress has yet to approve funding for the Indian Health Service, which is run by HHS but gets its money through the Department of the Interior, IHS feels the full weight of the shutdown. The only services that can continue are those that meet “immediate needs of the patients, medical staff, and medical facilities,” according to the shutdown contingency plan. That includes IHS-run clinics, which provide direct health care to tribes around the country. These facilities are open, and many staffers are reporting to work because they are deemed “excepted,” said Jennifer Buschik, an agency spokeswoman. But they will not be paid until Congress and the administration reach a deal.Related StoriesStudy estimates health care costs of uncontrolled asthma in the U.S. over next 20 yearsScientists develop universal FACS-based approach to heterogenous cell sorting, propelling organoid researchAXT enhances cellular research product portfolio with solutions from StemBioSysOther IHS programs are taking a more direct hit. For example, the agency has suspended grants that support tribal health programs, as well as preventive health clinics run by the Office of Urban Indian Health Programs.Public health efforts by Homeland Security and the EPA face serious constraints. The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Health Affairs assesses threats posed by infectious diseases, pandemics and biological and chemical attacks. It is supposed to be scaling back, according to the department’s shutdown contingency plan. This office is just one component of the 204-person Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office, which is retaining about 65 employees during the funding gap.Other DHS health workers are likely to work without pay — for instance, health inspectors at the border, said Peter Boogaard, who was an agency spokesman under the Obama administration. According to DHS’s plan, the vast majority of border patrol employees will continue working through the shutdown. The Environmental Protection Agency has also run out of funding. According to its contingency plan, it’s keeping on more than 700 employees without pay, including those who work on Superfund sites or other activities where the “threat to life or property is imminent.” (More than 13,000 EPA workers have been furloughed.)That limits the agency’s capacity for activities including inspecting water that people drink and regulating pesticides. But it’s not just regulation. The public health stakes are visceral — and sometimes, frankly, pretty gross.Just look at the National Park Service, which has halted restroom maintenance and trash service for lack of funding. On Sunday, Yosemite National Park in California closed its campgrounds. On Wednesday, Joshua Tree National Park, also in California, did the same. Why? Per a park service press release: “The park is being forced to take this action for health and safety concerns as vault toilets reach capacity.”last_img read more

first_imgReviewed by Kate Anderton, B.Sc. (Editor)Apr 16 2019Researchers have provided the first evidence that mass drug administration (MDA) can grant community-level protection against Plasmodium falciparum (P. falciparum) malaria.Their findings, published today in eLife, suggest that malaria elimination programs intending to use MDA as part of their efforts should approach communities in a way that encourages high levels of buy in and participation. The global burden of malaria has decreased over the last decade and many nations are aiming to eliminate the disease altogether, but a major challenge to this goal is people carrying malaria parasites without showing any symptoms. One method to help clear all infections in a community is MDA, whereby everyone is asked to take antimalarial drugs at the same time, regardless of whether or not they feel ill. This approach should be used only after routine malaria control measures are established, such as the distribution of mosquito nets and treatment of clinical cases.Related StoriesScientists identify malaria’s Achilles’ heelMosquito surveillance in Madagascar reveals new insight into malaria transmissionMalaria free status for Algeria and Argentina”Several studies have shown that MDA is a promising approach for reducing malaria burdens, but its success depends largely on community buy in,” explains first author Daniel Parker, Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health and Disease Prevention at the University of California, Irvine, US. “If enough community members participate, then even those who aren’t treated, such as young children or pregnant women, should be better protected as the number of infections are reduced – otherwise known as the ‘herd effect’. However, the idea of a herd effect providing additional levels of population protection against malaria has not yet been observed.”To explore this, Parker and his team used detailed data from an MDA trial in Kayin State, Myanmar. Their study covered four villages, which were selected based on P. falciparum malaria prevalence surveys, over the period from May 2013 to June 2015. A total of 3,229 villagers, including both males and females, were included in the analysis.Their findings revealed that individuals who lived in a neighborhood with high participation in MDA were less likely to have malaria. Meanwhile, those from neighborhoods with low MDA adherence had an almost three times higher chance of contracting malaria following treatment. In both cases, these results were regardless of whether or not the individuals took antimalarial drugs themselves, meaning that community participation is crucial to MDA success.”MDA is an important tool in the fight against malaria, and our work paves the way for further research and improvements to current practices concerning this method,” Parker concludes. “In particular, it highlights the importance of approaching communities in an engaging and appropriate manner if we are to encourage their involvement in MDA.” Source:https://elifesciences.org/for-the-press/27be0947/mass-drug-administrations-can-grant-population-protection-against-malarialast_img read more

first_imgThe prevalence numbers make TS seem rare, but it is actually the most common chromosomal disorder – far more common than cystic fibrosis. It is grossly underreported because 95 percent of fetuses who have TS die in utero. However, with the right care, babies who do survive can lead normal and fulfilling lives.”Siddharth Prakash, MD, PhD, associate professor of medical genetics Prakash recruited a team of multidisciplinary experts from UTHealth to provide necessary hormonal treatment and coordinated care at the center for TS patients who experience common side effects and medical issues, like hearing loss, autoimmune disorders, diabetes, swelling in the limbs, and heart abnormalities.”About half of our patients come from outside the Houston area, so it’s really important for them to have all their needs addressed in a timely manner at one place,” Prakash said. “The center allows patients that flexibility to see all the specialists they need in one day without traveling to multiple sites. It also ensures that all specialists have easy access to the patient’s medical records and are working together to provide the best multi-pronged treatment.”TSGA is the primary organization that networks TS clinics in North America and partner groups around the world to develop the guidelines for specialty clinics. TSGA has designated about 30 pediatric clinics, and is now identifying adult clinics.Related StoriesPersonalizing Nutritional Medicine With the Power of NMRResearch sheds light on sun-induced DNA damage and repairStudy confirms role of genetics in determining menopause age and familial longevity”It’s a major achievement for us to be one of the first adult clinics recognized by TSGA, as it helps us continue to advocate for comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for TS patients in the region and hopefully improve their outcomes. Also, the distinction will help us to connect patients with national research that is translational to clinical care right here at home. It used to be very difficult to study TS because each site would have so few patients, but now we can band together with other recognized TS sites for critical studies that otherwise wouldn’t have been feasible.”To earn the distinction, leaders of the center had to show that it allows patients to schedule same-day visits for various specialties, hosts regular meetings to educate both the community and physicians on the latest TS developments, follows international TSGA guidelines, conducts clinical and collaborative research, and networks with advocacy groups.”We interact closely with the Turner Syndrome Society of the United States, a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Houston. Every year in February, we team up to host a community day, where we provide free screenings and give presentations to keep the community informed about TS. We also partner with Leaping Butterfly Ministry, a nonprofit that sponsors hearing aids for girls and women with TS,” Prakash said.In the letter notifying UTHealth of the designation, Kelly Ranallo, TSGA founder and president, wrote: Reviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. Both are co-directors of the center, which began late last year.Turner syndrome (TS) is a chromosomal condition affecting girls and women, with physical traits and medical conditions caused by the complete or partial absence of the second sex chromosome. TS occurs in approximately 1 of every 2,000 female live births. A clinic model for care of adult women with TS is a new and growing idea, and the early development of your program positions you as a leader in the network of clinics. We value your strong connection to the advocacy community and your leadership in providing comprehensive adult care consistent with the 2018 guidelines.”center_img Prakash hopes the recognition will help the center establish an educational program that allows junior faculty and fellows to participate in clinical care and research.”As we build out the program, we’ll have a database on TS that will allow us to evaluate disorders over time – which we couldn’t do if we were providing piecemeal services. We’re looking forward to tracking our patients more closely, and hopefully uncovering findings that will be useful for others in the field.” Source:University of Texas Health Science Center at Houstonlast_img read more

first_imgKUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Malaysia’s Anwar Ibrahim, jailed twice for what he says were trumped-up sodomy charges, said on Thursday he has the support needed to become prime minister and denied calling for a potential challenger to resign over a new gay sex scandal. FILE PHOTO: Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim speaks during the Singapore Summit in Singapore, September 15, 2018. REUTERS/Edgar SuIndications of divisions in Anwar’s People’s Justice Party (PKR) surfaced after a series of videos circulated among politicians and journalists in June, allegedly showing Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali and another man having sex. Gay sex is illegal in Malaysia, and carries penalties of jail and whipping if convicted. Azmin, the deputy head of PKR and seen as close to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, said he was not in the videos which he called a “nefarious plot” to end his career. Anwar denied news reports that he had called for Azmin to resign if the videos were proved to be authentic. Anwar said his comments were taken out of context. “On the issue of the sex video, from the beginning we expressed disgust at the manner the gutter politics has been played,” Anwar told reporters in parliament on Thursday. Anwar brushed aside talk of a challenge from Azmin for the premiership. “I’ve got the numbers, I’ve got the support of Pakatan Harapan and the prime minister,” he said, referring to the ruling coalition of which PKR is the biggest party. “It is not fair to me or to Azmin to indicate otherwise.” Anwar was earlier rebuked by more than 20 members of PKR’s supreme council over his comments reported on Wednesday. “We urge (Anwar) as the Party President to stop making such divisive statements,” the council said in a statement. “We call upon him to work instead to unite the party in the interest of our members, Pakatan Harapan and our country.” Anwar said he accepted the criticism, which he said was a call for him to strengthen party unity.
