first_imgDear Editor,The fight within the People’s National Congress (PNC) to succeed David Granger as party leader has begun, even as he is receiving medical treatment overseas. From what is going on, the fight is nasty to say the least.Since coming to Government in May 2015, many allegations of corruption were levelled at various Government officials from sections of society. The many financial improprieties as revealed through the Auditor General reports are shocking. The Sussex Street bond fiasco, the D’Urban Park Project and the sole sourcing of hundreds of millions of dollars in drugs from both a leading Private Sector establishment and a shell company from overseas, are a mere few instances of wanton corruption. All were publicly denied by Government officials. As the President takes ill, the opportunists within are now pointing fingers at each other with accusations of corruption. Suddenly, it is a fight to show who is more corrupt. The infighting and the jostle for the position in the hierarchy of the leadership, has reached a point where it places the PNC on the path of breaking up and many stalwarts are worried. The battle to expose who has accumulated and sucked the most wealth from taxpayers since May 2015 has reached boiling point and now explains why they refused to submit their declarations to the Integrity Commission. The situation is such that the few who have the party at heart and who have expressed their concerns over the ongoing and unbridled corruption by party officials bleeding the country in the process, are being quickly pushed aside. What was always known by many regarding corruption by the PNC and which was denied, is coming to light from their own mouths as they trample on each other for the ultimately leadership position. If the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) and State Assets Recovery Agency (SARA) are really concerned about curbing corruption, it can easily gather confessions from those who are now fighting openly within the PNC. As they fight and the stories of corruption unfold, the impact could not only lead to the breakup of the PNC, but would bring further economic hardships to the country as a whole.Sincerely,Alvin Hamiltonlast_img read more

Eleven others sustained injuries of various degrees and are undergoing medical treatment at the J.F.K. Medical Center in Sinkor, Monrovia. An LNP release said among the wounded was Super FM program producer Rose Zazay, who sustained wounds on both legs. The LNP said it is yet to establish the cause of the accident. The truck driver, Mohammed Kamara, 38, is reportedly assisting the LNP in its investigation. The LNP said “Under Chapter 5 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law of Liberia, captioned Civil Liability,  every owner of a vehicle operated on any highway to which this title is applicable shall be liable and responsible for deaths or injuries to a person or property(ies) resulting from negligence in the use or operation of such a vehicle.”Many people interviewed by the Daily Observer appealed to the government to regulate the time that heavy laden container trucks operate in the city.“Most of the container trucks are faulty,” said a young woman who saw the accident, adding, “the truck’s brake gave up and that was why the accident took place.”She appealed to the LNP to work along with the Ministry of Transport to ensure that faulty trucks are removed from the streets of Monrovia and are not allowed to haul heavy containers.“We have to be proactive to prevent accidents from happening,” she said. “It is bad for the government to allow preventable accidents to take place that (take away) precious lives.”Eye witnesses recalled that due to faulty vehicles, many Liberians have lost their lives and Saturday’s accident should claim the attention of the government.“The Ministry of Transport and the LNP should visit the Freeport of Monrovia and examine all container vehicles and remove those not road worthy from the streets. That way we would prevent future unnecessary deaths,” she said.In a related development, another container truck reportedly lost control and fell on its side near the Bong Mines Bridge, outside Monrovia last evening. Although no casualty was reported, the situation created a prolonged traffic jam in the area.last_img read more

The season couldn’t have gone any better for the Continental Kings as they put a bow on their year with an 8-2 win in the finals over Big Chief.Darcy Corcoran plays for the squad and said after falling behind early the team stuck with the game plan and it was full steam ahead from there.“The game was pretty good,” he said. “We gave up one early but we came back and played pretty hard. They took some stupid penalties and we capitalized on it. We controlled the puck and put pressure on them and put the puck on the net.”- Advertisement -The tournament also provided Huskies prospect Logan Edwards with some playing time as starting goalie Sheldon Gibb was unable to take part in the tournament.Prior to the year end tournament win the Kings went 13-3-2 in the regular season, and 3-0-1 in the playoffs.last_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest A day before the 2016 Ohio State Fair officially opens to the public, a staple of the dairy industry was unveiled to the public. The Cleveland Cavaliers and their recent NBA championship highlights this year’s Butter Cow Display.“We’re really excited about Ohio’s dairy farmers being able to sponsor this display,” said Scott Higgins of the American Dairy Association – Mideast. “The celebration of the Cleveland Cavaliers becoming national champions after all these years is one we just simply couldn’t pass up. We are excited to be able to display them in butter. And the depiction we have using Moon Dog and Sir CC and of course the treasured trophy wrapped with the cavalier logo is on display here, one that you’re not going to want to miss.”The butter sculptures will be on display the entire length of the fair in the Dairy Products Building between the Coliseum and the Voinovich Building. The cooler in which the butter is kept remains a balmy 46 degrees. Overall, the works took 500 hours to complete and about 2,150 pounds of butter were used in the process. The display looks to recognize Ohio’s dairy farmers.“Of course the butter cow and butter calf always look dynamic. We have a dairy farmer who’s an artist and he comes and does this for us every other year. It’s a beautiful cow, come see her,” Higgins said.Several fair dignitaries were in attendance and spoke to the audience. The 2016 Ohio State Fair opens to the public on Wednesday and runs through August 7th.last_img read more

5210 Healthy Messaging Campaign takeaway slide by Dr. Jen Dinallo presented Sept 22, 2015Blog by Robin Allen MSPH, RDN , LDN5-2-1-0 Healthy Messaging, Healthy Military Children was a great webinar, presented on September 22, 2015 by Dr. Jen DiNallo.  The first time I had heard about the 5210 Healthy Messaging Program was preparing for this webinar.  Now I discover it is being used successfully in many communities, including my hometown of Pensacola, FL.What did I learn?  I have mistakenly been referring to 5210 only in connection with childhood obesity.  I was very wrong!   5210 is health promotion program for children and teens!  What is the difference? Health promotion is a positive focus and is for everyone.  Childhood obesity is negative and eliminates children/teens who may still need to develop other healthy behaviors.5210 Healthy Military Children was further explored with Dr. Jennifer DiNallo in this interesting audio cast with Dr. Karen Chapman-Novakofski, MFLN Nutrition and Wellness. The Military has fully embraced this program for families, child care facilities, elementary, middle and high schools, youth centers, after-school programs, cafeterias, restaurants, commissaries/grocery stores, fitness centers, workplace, and all healthcare professionals and leaders. The 2 main goals:“Permeate children’s and families’ environments with the 5210 message.“Provides strategies to support 5210 behaviors to a variety of people and places.”center_img “5210 podcast” How can you implement 5210 in your community?  Check out the 5210 HMC website www.5210.healthymilitarychildren.psu.edu.   There is a tool kit with step by step instructions to help with the implementation of this great program located at this web site.  More information is available at the Clearinghouse for Military Family Readiness http://www.militaryfamilies.psu.edu/ .5210 might be just right for your community, school, or wherever healthy children, teens and family is a priority. This post was written by Robin Allen, a member of the Military Families Learning Network (MFLN) Nutrition and Wellness team which aims to support the development of professionals working with military families.  Find out more about the MFLN Nutrition and Wellness concentration on our website, on Facebook, on Twitter and on LinkedIn. 10:11last_img read more

first_imgCheck out these great resources to better understand how tweaking your color, contrast and composition can improve your creative work.Recently there have been a few great links floating around Twitter and elsewhere to some really fantastic articles on color, contrast, composition and how a few simple tips can help improve the final output of your creative work. I’ve tried to pull them together here for your viewing pleasure and creative edification. Enjoy! What happens when David Fincher, Matthew Libatique and Justin Timberlake get together… I think this Justin Timberlake music video, directed by David Fincher and shot by DP Matthew Libatique is a pretty stunning example of what great composition, contrast and featured lighting can create. When images are stripped of all their color the eye is far better able to focus on just the shapes and spaces. Geometric shapes are easier to take in and can create great negative spaces. Fincher and Libatique shot on 5 RED EPIC Monochrome cameras at an ASA of 3200 apparently.Another stunning resource for analysing more black and white images is Evan Richards’ post filled with film stills from Raider’s of The Lost Ark in black and white. Evan noticed in an interview with director Steven Soderbergh that he had watched Raider’s 3 times in one week and entirely in black and white. Again by simplifying the visual data the eye is receiving its much easier to focus on the nature of the composition and contrast in the images. Here’s a cool trick, next time you’re framing up try to strip out all of the color on your monitor and then once you’ve got things looking right dial the color back in.Understanding Contrast and its Various EffectsEditor and colorist Aaron Williams has written up a simple but effective post on how ‘Contrast is king’ and can be used for technical reasons (increasing perceived sharpness and so ‘fixing’ soft-focus shots) as well as creative ones. Aaron supplies some great examples of how tweaking your contrast  can dramatically set the tone and feel of your images.Often, it’s what the audience can’t see that creates tension. Noir films used this to great effect with the ultra-high contrast by creating blacks so deep the audience just knew someone had to be lurking in the shadows.Tweaking Color Temperature to Create Depth & DimensionDirector of Photography Shane Hurlburt (ASC) recently shared this great post on using color temperature to create depth and dimension when shooting HD video. Shane also has some great examples of how to make the most of the natural color temperatures of different light sources to create realistic looking images (as in true to life, rather than ‘Hollywood-ised’) and how he used this to great effect on Crazy/Beautiful. Fascinating stuff. While working with one of my favorite directors, Maurice Marable, we were doing a spot in an underground parking garage. When you went with the color temp of the lights that existed in the space, the mood was blah, no depth, no dimension. I got on the scroll wheel of the Alexa and cranked it down to 2700 deg. Kelvin, and Maurice was like “Wow, that looks bangin!!!” Just the simple use of this tool can create a whole other chapter in the way you light. What films/projects have you seen that have a unique approach to color and contrast?  Share project names and links in the comments below!last_img read more
