And billions of rands spent on improving South Africa for the long term beyond the World Cup.This is the spectacle that will greet the world on 11 June 2010 – more than six years after South Africa was chosen as hosts, bringing the largest sporting event in the world to the African continent for the first time.On Tuesday, 2 March, this celebration of football and of Africa’s humanity will be just 100 days away. What will you do on 2 March to mark this important landmark for the country and the international football community?Government, FIFA, the Organising Committee (OC), South African Tourism, the International Marketing Council of South Africa (Brand South Africa) the SABC and a range of partners in the public and private sectors are pooling ideas and initiatives to ensure that 2 March is celebrated with all the passion and vibrancy that the world associates with this young, dynamic country. The national and global highlight of the 2 March festivities countrywide will be a widely publicised event in Durban where government, the OC and FIFA will jointly start the 100 Day Countdown. The 2010 National Communication Partnership of private and public-sector marketers and communicators will implement activities that will add impetus to this national landmark.2 March is therefore earmarked as a day on which South Africans, here and abroad, are called upon to demonstrate their excitement for the tournament, and to display their passion for the country and the beautiful game.It is also a day for previewing how we will open our hearts and homes to the hundreds of thousands of visitors who will soon be driving, flying and sailing to this diverse, scenic and rapidly developing destination at the southern tip of the African continent. From flying the flag and donning Bafana Bafana kit, to feasting on homegrown meals and music, 2 March is a celebration of what the country has already achieved in preparing for the tournament, and a chance to get our hearts and minds into the spirit of the FIFA World Cup.So, what can you do on 2 March? “Fly the Flag” on the day!The 100 Day Countdown builds on the “Fly the flag” initiative, which brings together all who live in South Africa around the country’s national symbols and anthem, and expresses support for Bafana Bafana.Organisation and institutions are invited to host events at midday (12 noon) on 2 March, enabling staff, clients and partners to sing the national anthem, wear the Bafana Bafana kit, dance the Diski and acknowledge the flag.Mini-football, football quizzes, chats about what makes us good hosts and good football supporters and discussing ways in which football can bring us closer as a nation, are among the activities that could serve as in-house team-building exercises.Of course, a simple braai will add to the feel-good factor!Create awareness about the importance of hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and communicate the important role each of your audiences creates in nation-building.Make Football Fridays a standard celebration in your home, community and officeEach Friday, before and after 2 March, encourage those around you to wear the Bafana Bafana kit and create a “sea of gold” on the streets and inside the stadium when the national team plays. Information on official Bafana Bafana merchandise and licensees can be obtained on the website: SLAM. So, wear your shirt from now onwards, fly your flag and learn the national anthem. Many companies are already hosting Football Fridays and some activation can be viewed on the website: Football Friday.Get into shape with the Diski DanceThe Diski Dance can provide fun and team-building, promoting excitement and national unity. first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Moisture begins to ramp up more today, although we still will see some sunshine and temps remain warm. Scattered showers will be developing today across Ohio, particularly this afternoon and evening. Those showers will produce anywhere from a tenth to .75″ with coverage at 60%. Areas that miss out on the rain today will see some sun, but generally clouds building, particularly this afternoon then tonight. Tomorrow through Sunday we have scattered showers in the forecast each day. Daily rain fall totals will be from a few hundredths to half an inch for every day except Sunday, where we expect a a tenth to three quarters of an inch. Daily coverage will run from 75% to 100% statewide, and combined rain coverage for the period will be 100%. We expect combined rain totals of 1″ to 2.5” for the week at least, and a few areas can exceed that top end of the range. Those totals are up from yesterday’s forecast. Dry weather attempts to return to the region finally for Monday and Tuesday and the first part of Wednesday of next week. On Monday we see cloudy to partly sunny skies but at this time still cant rule out a shower in spots. Then for Tuesday sunshine dominates, and we see that continue through the first part of Wednesday. Our next well organized cold front is on the way for next Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday night. That front moves from NW to SE across the region and will bring .1”-.75” to 80% of the state, and the biggest rains will come overnight Wednesday night. Thursday and Friday turn out partly to mostly sunny again, as we transition from the 10 day period in to the extended 11-16 day window. The balance of the extended period is active. On Saturday the 13th we see partly to mostly sunny skies, but showers may try to develop in the evening and overnight. On Sunday clouds increase and thicken further, with nighttime thunderstorms likely. These thunderstorms can bring from .25” to 1”. Monday the 15th and Tuesday the 16th we have rain and thunderstorms fully crossing the state. Monday the action will be primarily located through central and northwestern Ohio, and then Tuesday over most of the state, but perhaps a little more concentrated in central and southern Ohio. Rain totals will produce an additional .25”-1” for that 2 day period with statewide coverage of near 90%. We finish the extended period with a mix of clouds and sun for Wednesday the 17th. So, there will be plenty of moisture potential over the next 2 weeks, but it comes in small enough increments and at a slow enough pace that it is not overly problematic. The map below shows 10 day rain totals for the state. Temperatures also will stay near normal, with daytime highs from 80-88 over the rest of this week and into next, meaning we will continue to see very humid air, and will keep evaporation going at least at a rate of .1” of liquid per day, if not more – even if it does rain off an on.last_img read more

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market audrey watters A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#start#startups center_img Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts XING founder Lars Hinrichs has launched a new pre-seed investment company, HackFwd. Although HackFwd provides financial support and mentorship to tech startups, HackFwd is not an incubator. In other words, rather than expecting startups to relocate to the company’s headquarters in Germany, HackFwd meetups will be distributed – something that might be very beneficial for European startups.According to the website, “We looked carefully at current VC models and realized they didn’t really cater to very early stage businesses. VCs can’t support small investments, which leaves a finance gap. Also, VCs don’t have the time or expertise to give strategic or creative input. This leaves an advice gap.”In addressing both this finance and advice gap, HackFwd provides startups up to €191,000 in funding, as well as support with legal and administrative requirements, talent-search, promotion and marketing. The goal: “Our start-up and support process accelerates the route to beta, profitability, and success.” Founders retain 70% equity with 30% going to HackFwd. While this is higher than some similar programs (YCombinator and TechStars take around 6%), the HackFwd program lasts a year, rather than only a few months. In an interesting twist, 3% of HackFwd’s cut is returned to the founders, for them to distribute in turn to advisors who helped them along the way.In their desire to help support “Europe’s most passionate geeks,” HackFwd will compete with other early stage investment opportunities in Europe, including SeedCamp. And even if you aren’t a European startup in search of some early-stage funding, a visit to the HackFwd website is well worth a visit, just to look at their infographic on the startup feedback loop (excerpted below).last_img read more

first_imgLast month I had the great fortune to meet with Ethan Landis of Landis Construction Corp., a leading design/build firm in Washington, D.C. The company was founded in 1990 by Ethan, an MBA, and his brother Chris, an architect. They specialize in home renovations in the greater Washington area, and over the last few years, the Landis’ company has defined its commitment to green building. As Ethan explains, that definition is dynamic. I traveled up the Red Line to the Tacoma Park metro stop to spend a couple of hours talking to him about it.Ethan spearheaded the green transition for the company while Chris took a more cautious approach. Four yars ago, they began, like a lot of companies, by looking closely at the building envelope and energy efficiency. As the initiative developed, Ethan asked himself how they could create a new green culture within their company. The answer came one fateful evening when he met Russ Clark at a social event. The two clicked immediately, and Russ soon found himself employed as the Green Program Manager at Landis Construction.I asked Ethan about the single defining event that cemented the company’s shift to green. He said that it was when they decided to hire a dedicated green staff person. Sure, they got a person to handle the green workload and learning curve, but it also demonstrated to the rest of the team the company’s commitment to green building. Russ was charged with the goal of making the shift to marketing the company as green while also walking the walk. His biggest challenge was getting everyone on the same page on green-building philosophies within both the company and its network of subcontractors and suppliers. He began working on the accompanying philosophy, practices, and marketing efforts. Ethan told me that the result was the company commitment to approaching green building as an integrated process rather than isolated products.Since hiring Russ, they have found their green offerings to be more and more in demand, currently offering them to all clients, with lots of takers. They analyzed and reviewed the origins of their projects in 2008, and more than 30% of their clients stated that they would not have come to the firm if they had not incorporated green practices. Ethan’s advice: Commit to green, and make it stick both financially and physically. The Landis Construction office is what Ethan calls “LEED certifiable,” following the USGBC rating system without completing the actual rating process. After taking that plunge, Landis is working on its first LEED for Homes project in Georgetown. The company is striving for LEED for Homes Platinum, and should know the results fairly soon. I was able to interview Russ on-site and take a close look at that project. Watch for the video coming soon at Green Building Advisor, and I will keep you posted on the results of Landis’ performance tests and certification. A tribute to their dedication, Russ and the guys are constantly reviewing their Green Program so that they can evolve with the industry and the market, redefining and updating practices.Ethan also shared some survival techniques that his company is employing in the down economy.Make a full commitment to green, with a person in charge. This ensures that the initiative will advance every business day. When developing the big-picture green goals, incorporate the livelihood and sustainability of the business as well. If the business didn’t weather the storm, neither would Landis’ green initiative. To them it meant adapting to a changing economic landscape.Landis created and nurtured a new, green, holistic company culture: green office space, office practices, hybrid vehicles, events, and last but definitely not least, building practices. They are a 100% renovation company, more in demand than new-home construction at this time. This was an existing characteristic of the company, and one that has kept them busy through the storm.Even though Landis offers design services, it has begun soliciting other architects for leads to help support the renovation side of the company.Landis is asking past clients for referrals. Sometimes this even keeps the company on the radar for return clients.Landis has developed an active marketing plan that keeps the company in the minds of potential clients without becoming annoying (no cold calling).Landis Construction has had two “rethinking” events over the last couple of years. First was the shift to becoming a green company in every interpretation of the term, reinventing all of its practices from the business and building perspective. Second, the recession forced management to take a critical look at marketing, and to begin gentle, sincere guerilla marketing tactics. One was voluntary, the other forced, but both have allowed Landis to stay relatively busy in our current economic climate.last_img read more

first_imgIn this video tutorial, learn how simple it is to stabilize GoPro footage with a new standalone software app — ReelSteady GO.It seems obvious that action cameras are going to need stabilization. So, it is no surprise that the two biggest action cameras right now, GoPro Hero7 Black and DJI Osmo Action, both tout in-camera stabilization. But, there may be a better way. (For GoPro cameras, at least.) And that is with a new standalone app called ReelSteady GO. What makes this app unique is that it uses GoPro’s own gyroscope metadata to stabilize the footage. As a result, the stabilization process is lightning fast — and it’s the best post-stabilization I have ever seen.Ready to see what all the hype is about? Let’s check it out!If you would like to follow along with the tutorial, you can download a free-trial of ReelSteady GO and use the GoPro clips I have included in the project file!DOWNLOAD THE PROJECT FILEThese assets are free to use in any personal or commercial projects. By downloading, you agree not to redistribute these assets.Backstory on ReelSteadyReelSteady is a company most known for their After Effects plugin, which is arguably the best post-stabilization plugin there is. The results are stunning, and it is frequently used to stabilize racing drone footage. However, it’s an After Effects plugin geared toward professionals, so it is quite expensive at $399. This also means you must have an Adobe Creative Cloud membership to use it.ReelSteady GOReelSteady recently announced a new app called ReelSteady GO. This app is much more affordable (priced at $99) and is a standalone app. (So you can stabilize your footage, then use your editing program of choice.) The catch is that the software only works with GoPro cameras with an internal gyro. This is because the software uses that gyro metadata to quickly stabilize the footage in post. The results often look like the camera was mounted on a motorized 3-axis gimbal.Warp Stabilizer ComparisonIn comparison, Warp Stabilizer (included in After Effects and Premiere Pro) has to perform a frame-by-frame image analysis in order to stabilize footage. Not only is this a much slower process, it’s also prone to errors caused by lens flares and rolling shutter artifacts. Since ReelSteady GO uses the gyro information for stabilization, it’s unaffected by the actual on-screen images of the video.ConclusionI fully expected the footage from the Jeep driving test to be unusable. However, ReelSteady GO handled the stabilization without a hitch. The final footage looked as smooth as a drone flying down the road. The simplicity of the app also makes it approachable for casual action camera users. Hopefully, ReelSteady will continue to expand the app to work with even more action cameras with built-in gyroscopes.Interested in the tracks we used to make this video?“Tropical Cruise” by Cymatix“Adapta” by Tonemassif“Summer Leaves” by Mattijs MullerLooking for more video tutorials? first_imgPrime minister Sheikh HasinaDescribing Bangladesh as mainly a country of plain land, prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday underscored the need for the continuation of land recovery and river dredging on a routine basis. She made the remarks when ambassador of the Netherlands Leoni Cuelenaere paid a farewell call on her at her Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban office.Prime minister’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting. The prime minister and the Dutch envoy mainly discussed issues related to the delta plan, women empowerment and Rohingya crisis.About the delta plan, Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh is a low-lying country and most of the rivers flowing through the country originate from the Himalayas. The capacity of the rivers decrease due to huge silts which they carry from the upstream, she said, adding that dredging is essential to increase their capacity of flowing water. The prime minister put emphasis on making river routes more active to lessen pressure on roads.About the women empowerment, she said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman ensured it through keeping women seats reserved in parliament for 15 years, while her government later extended the duration. She also mentioned that 22 female MPs are directly elected in the current parliament.Sheikh Hasina said her government is working to further increase communication network with the neighbours. She observed that the northeastern Indian states can use Chittagong port.At the meeting, the outgoing Ambassador of the Netherlands praised the government’s initiative of river dredging, saying it will help strengthen the economy of Bangladesh.Leoni Cuelenaere said the Netherlands wants to further expedite activities on trade and commerce with Bangladesh and cooperation on the RMG sector in particular.Talking about the Rohingya issue, the Netherlands envoy highly appreciated the government of Sheikh Hasina for showing human gesture by giving shelter and other supports to the Myanmar nationals forcibly displaced from the Rakhine State.Leoni Cuelenaere also expressed her gratitude to the prime minister and her government for extending cooperation in discharging responsibilities in Bangladesh.last_img read more
