The Best New Artist category highlights newcomers — whether a solo artist, duo or group — but since “new” is a relative term, let’s take a closer look at how making the cut is determined.First of all, eligible artists must have achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness and impacted the musical landscape during the year’s eligibility period. This speaks to the essence of why Best New Artist is one of the most-anticipated categories each year, honoring exciting new talent in the music world. But sometimes rising stars take a while to reach this point, so numerical limits also help define the criteria for being “new” in this category. The first numerical rule boils eligibility down to the number of an artist’s releases. The minimum required is five singles or tracks or a complete album. The maximum is either three albums or a total of 30 singles or tracks previously released. Having more than this number of releases results in being ineligible even when an artist breaks through into public consciousness and impacts the musical landscape in a given eligibility period.However, even if this numerical release criterion is met, an artist may still be deemed ineligible if the artist achieved previous prominence, meaning the artist came into prominence prior to the current eligibility year.Another numerical limit is that an artist cannot have been considered more than three times previously for Best New Artist. This also applies to solo artists who emerge from having performed as a member in previous groups. 13:57 Alphabet, Google’s parent company, will be redeveloping an area along the waterfront of Lake Ontario for its Sidewalk Labs initiative. Sidewalk Labs Google’s parent company Alphabet will reportedly open its first smart city buildings in Toronto as early as 2023. Google will eventually move into the Canadian smart campus, the report said. Dan Doctoroff, founder and CEO of Alphabet subsidiary Sidewalk Labs — which focuses on innovation in urban environments — told the Collision Conference in Canada of the timeline for the project, according to CNBC. The report said Doctoroff will submit a proposal next month, and after negotiations is hoping to break ground on the buildings by the end of 2020. The buildings would open in either late 2023 or early 2024. “These things take time, but that doesn’t mean we can’t begin to see the real fruits from a quality of life benefit perspective within a few years after the place opens up,” Doctoroff is reported as saying. “We would significantly expand Google’s presence in Toronto and move the head Canadian headquarters down to the waterfront.” Sidewalk Toronto quoted Doctoroff as saying at the Collision Conference that the company is “very focused on bringing in Canadian partners from a real estate, infrastructure and technology perspective. Part of this is to encourage the local tech ecosystem to grow.” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Alphabet’s smart campus project on the waterfront along Lake Ontario back in 2017. The development was originally designed to house just Sidewalk Labs, but Google later said it would join it. “This project offers unprecedented opportunities for Canadian innovators and will create thousands of good, middle class jobs,” Trudeau said at the announcement alongside Alphabet Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt. October 7, 2014 3 min read If you have one too many cards to keep track of, payment startup Plastc purports to have the solution: a single card that holds all of your pertinent information, from credit and gift cards to electronic key access. Users can store up to 20 cards (though not a driver’s license).The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company was launched in January 2013. The patent-pending, waterproof Plastc cards — which have e-ink displays and can be swiped through like an e-reader — are now available to pre-order and will begin shipping summer 2015. The card costs $155 and runs on a rechargeable, wireless battery. There are no additional fees when a customer uses the Plastc card. Apple’s new digital wallet service Apple Pay is being touted as a game changer before it is even announced, and it is entering a growing field that includes Amazon, the newly independent PayPal, and startups like Square, Stripe and Plastc’s more direct competition, Coin.The Verge reports that the two-year-old Coin which announced its card back in November with plans to begin shipping the eight-card storage product this summer — but it hasn’t made an appearance yet.Related: Apple Pay May Be the Creative Leap That Outmaneuvers SamsungPlastc cards come equipped with a barcode, magnetic strip, a pin number you key in on the display, and an EMV chip (a fraud-prevention technology). As of now, Coin cards do not support that chip. This a vital difference between the two companies, in Plastc’s favor. By October 2015, retailers and restaurants must transition over to chip cards — if they don’t want to be held liable for counterfeit fraud. So if a business continues to accept magnetic-stripe credit cards after this deadline, they will be held responsible for any fraudulent activity.While it is still too early to determine which platform will win out, the evolution of the credit card is putting these companies on notice. August 20, 2015 Watching a movie has traditionally been a largely passive experience. But what if the person watching could influence what happens on-screen via their brainwaves? An experimental short-film called ‘Scanners’ aims to create a platform that bridges the gap between digital arts and neuroscience.Using a wireless brain scanner that reads both muscular and brainwave data, the system allows the user to manipulate the film’s structure. Creator Richard Ramchurn said the audience can subconsciously project their feelings onto the film and have these feelings visualized by the shape the film takes.”Scanners is a film platform that uses live data from people’s brains to cut and mix a film where you have an effect loop – a two-way effect loop – whereby, watching the film you change it and it changes you,” Ramchurn told Reuters.Based in Manchester, Ramchurn was inspired to developed the experimental system after reading ‘In the Blink of an Eye’, by acclaimed film editor Walter Murch. In the book, Murch theorises that the rates and rhythms of blinking relate to the rhythm and sequence of thoughts and emotions.Using a commercially available electroencephalography (EEG) headset from company NeuroSky, Ramchurn’s first prototype set out to prove the platform’s potential. The next step was to create video specifically for the project, including shooting the 15-minute film with enough footage for all the varying narrative strands that each viewer could bring to it.”The initial prototype used off-the-shelf footage and basically just proved to us that there was something there with brain signals feeding back a film experience. Our next stage was to try and really make a film specifically for the platform. And that involved making something that was much bigger than the duration called for. I mean; we made a 15 minute film but it was more like making a feature,” said Ramchurn. “The opportunities that allowed us was rather than making a linear film, we made a film that was much more quantum. We had multiple stories or happenings at the same time. And we were able to show what’s happening inside somebody’s mind, what’s happening in, almost, their imagination at the same time as the reality,” he added.The EEG headset reads the different brainwaves; Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Theta. Ramchurn said he is specifically using the Alpha brain waves, which are important for creativity. The headset has two sensors; one that sits on the forehead and one that clips to the ear lobe. The forehead sensor picks up both muscular and brainwave data, while the sensor on the ear lobe just picks up muscular data. With this information, the processor inside the headset can separate the muscular data to isolate and identify the various brainwaves.Ramchurn said that the rhythms of the editing and the way the film jumps from scene to scene depended on the mindset of the person watching it; and this is largely out of the person’s control.The filmmaker recently took the technology to Liverpool for a field test; inviting curious passers-by to give ‘Scanners’ a try inside a caravan converted into a mobile cinema.”Watching other people make connections with their brain is really fascinating. And each time I watch someone else create the film, they make new jumps that I’ve not seen before,” he said.While the platform was developed to explore a possible new dimension of visual art, Ramchurn says the system is the perfect device for exploring dreams because it brings a person’s subconscious to the forefront, visualizing it in front of their eyes. He added that scientists are close to developing a device that is capable of making detailed recordings of a dream.”I’m really excited that science is acknowledging that dreams actually exist and they can be measured. And being able to tap into that data is, for me, gives some real opportunities to tell stories or even create platforms that can communicate with people in a different way,” he said. Register Now »
